Histoire
Twenty-eight florins a month is a huge price to pay for a man to stand between you and the Wild. Twenty-eight florins a month is nowhere near enough when a wyvern's jaws snap shut on your helmet in the hot stink of battle, and the beast starts to rip the head from your shoulders. But if standing and fighting is hard, leading a company of men - or worse, a company of mercenaries - against the smart, deadly creatures of the Wild is even harder. It takes all the advantages of birth, training, and the luck of the devil to do it.

The next book in the Masters & Mages series that started with Cold Iron, from the master of fantasy Miles Cameron... Only fools think war is simple or glorious. On the magic-drenched battlefield, information is the lifeblood of victory, and Aranthur is about to discover that carrying messages, scouting the enemy, keeping his nerve, and passing on orders is more dangerous, and more essential, then an inexperienced soldier could imagine...especially when everything starts to go wrong.

Description
One enemy has fallen. A greater one remains.
Now it's war.
With one army defeated in a victory that will be remembered through the ages, now the Red Knight must fight again.
For every one of his allies, there is a corresponding enemy. Spread across different lands and on sea, it will all come down to one last gamble. And to whether or not the Red Knight has guessed the foe's true intentions.
With each throw of the dice, everything could be lost.
The Plague of Swords is the gripping fourth audiobook in the Traitor Son Cycle.

ugh! go back to the original narrator
The story is great. No complaints on Miles Cameron.
The narrator, however, is horrible. I finally got used to his new (and incorrect) pronunciation near the end of the last book (I mean, made up words it's understandable, though he should have listened to the first narrator and stayed consistent, but actual English, French, Latin, Italian, etc words should be pronounced correctly) but now he has changed it again. So not only is it not phonetic, or consistent with the first narrator, its now not even consistent with himself!
Same issue with the voices. From one narrator to the next, they change, sure. But not only were they all much to similar with this guy, now they aren't consistent with the last book he read. I'm glad I read the actual book first, or I wouldn't have been able to get past the narrator to get through the story.

Truly great
Number 4, the novels get better each time, I re-listened to books one thru three before reading this one, I think it made it more enjoyable.

Narrator change, beware
So the new narrator did OK, but there's some minor pronunciation that was inconsistent with the last 3 books that was particularly jarring.
We've spent 3 books heading about "Ti-con-DAGA" now we're heading about some place called "Tie-con-deNAGA". Had one mispronunciation on "minute", where he called it as a measure of time rather that a measure of unit and the context clearly meant size, but I was overly sensitive at that point.
He did decent enough on the characters though. If he had started the series of be totally happy.
The story is good, although it doesn't seem like we advanced the overall plot all that much by the end. Definitely suffers from middle child syndrome as another reader noted.

he should have stopped at book 3.
the speaker does a phenomenal job narrating the story. My problem is more with the content. It expands to quickly and has two little explanation for what's going on. I've read the three previous books and each one continues to get worse. This is by far the worst of 4.

Excellent! Thank you Miles!!
Superb historical / mythological world. All the adventure excitement wonder and discovery you could want. Made even better because George R R Martin isn't lurking behind every bush to suck all the joy from the story. Best of all? No incest. What a breath of clean fresh air.

Slow going.
Struggled to finish. This one never picked up momentum, almost as if it's a setup for the next book. Will likely not pick up the next book in the series however for fear of more of the same.

keep them comming
This is another exteodinary book in this series. You defiantly would need to have listened to the first 3 books to know what is what in this book. Once you have that foundation , this book gets you deeper and deeper unto the twisted world of good vs. evil that is never quite as bold a line as we think it should be.
