Histoire
On January 24, 1943, 230 women were placed in four cattle trucks on a train in Compiegne, in Northeastern France, and the doors bolted shut for the journey to Auschwitz. They were members of the French Resistance, ranging in age from teenagers to the elderly, women who before the war had been doctors, farmers' wives, secretaries, biochemists, schoolgirls. With immense courage they had taken up arms against a brutal occupying force; now their friendship would give them strength as they experienced unimaginable horrors.

Histoire
Eugenie Bearhani (1760-1835) was born in Calcutta, raised in Haiti, and brought as a servant - a free woman of color - to America by an English officer on the eve of the American Revolution. Yet none of that prepared Eugenie for her next employer: Colonel Aaron Burr, who some whispered had made a pact with the devil. The lines between master and servant soon tangle and blur, and first attraction becomes dangerous obsession. Many historians deny she even existed, but she and the children she bore to Burr were very real - so was her little-known marriage to America's first true villain.

Description
A GMA Buzz Pick * An Indie Next Pick * An Amazon Best of the Month Pick, Literature and Fiction * A People Magazine Pick
The New York Times best-selling author of The Last Train to London revisits the dark early days of the German occupation in France in this haunting novel - a love story and a tale of high-stakes danger and incomparable courage - about a young American heiress who helps artists hunted by the Nazis escape from war-torn Europe.
Wealthy, beautiful Naneé was born with a spirit of adventure. For her, learning to fly is freedom. When German tanks roll across the border and into Paris, this woman with an adorable dog and a generous heart joins the resistance. Known as the Postmistress because she delivers information to those in hiding, Naneé uses her charms and skill to house the hunted and deliver them to safety.
Photographer Edouard Moss has escaped Germany with his young daughter only to be interned in a French labor camp. His life collides with Nanée’s in this sweeping tale of romance and danger set in a world aflame with personal and political passion.
Inspired by the real life Chicago heiress Mary Jayne Gold, who worked with American journalist Varian Fry to smuggle artists and intellectuals out of France, The Postmistress of Paris is the haunting story of an indomitable woman whose strength, bravery, and love is a beacon of hope in a time of terror.

Really great story and characters
I loved the characters and learning more about France during this time. The artist angle was quite interesting and even cooler that it's based on a true story and real people. I really liked that they used accents and a male voice for Eduard's performance. I found the woman's voice put emphasis on strange words and was quite 2 dimensional. Overall I loved it! Would definitely recommend.

Not My Favorite
One of the reasons why I gave this book a mediocre rating is that there is a great deal of repitition of certain phrases - the name of the special photograph, the nickname for the camp commandant, entirely too much about the kangaroos, etc. That always makes me think the author is being paid by the word. Useless repetition always makes me suspect a lack of writing skills and leads to boredom for me. The story behind this book is interesting and deserves to be told, but I found the telling to be slow and tedious. Perhaps it was the narrators; the female narrator's voice was pleasant but a bit slow. The male was terrible at voicing children and irritating the rest of the time. I'm sure many people will love this book. I enjoy WWII fiction and nonfiction, but having read and listened to "The Gentleman from Moscow" and "All the Light We Cannot See", I expect more.

Don’t bother
This was a romance novel even though it was “based” on a woman who lived in occupied France during World War 2. It was shallow and should be billed as a romance fictional book. I purchased it based on rave reviews that still has me scratching my head and wondering why???? Not my cup of tea and sorry I wasted my time.
