A BEHIND THE SCENES GLIMPSE INTO THE LIVES OF HENRY VIII, ANNE BOLEYN, ELIZABETH I AND MORE: PERFECT FOR FANS OF WOLF HALL

----

'I do not live in a corner. A thousand eyes see all I do.' Elizabeth I

The Tudor monarchs were constantly surrounded by an army of attendants, courtiers and ministers. Even in their most private moments, they were accompanied by a servant specifically appointed for the task. A groom of the stool would stand patiently by as Henry VIII performed his daily purges, and when Elizabeth I retired for the evening, one of her female servants would sleep at the end of her bed.

These attendants knew the truth behind the glamorous exterior. They saw the tears shed by Henry VII upon the death of his son Arthur. They knew the tragic secret behind 'Bloody' Mary's phantom pregnancies. And they saw the 'crooked carcass' beneath Elizabeth I's carefully applied makeup, gowns and accessories.

It is the accounts of these eyewitnesses, as well as a rich array of other contemporary sources that historian Tracy Borman has examined more closely than ever before. With new insights and discoveries, and in the same way that she brilliantly illuminated the real Thomas Cromwell - The Private Life of the Tudors will reveal previously unexamined details about the characters we think we know so well.

For those who are fascinated by the Tudor dynasty this is a truly interesting listen. It includes many facts about their family and relationships that, while dry, do make for a better understanding of their rulers and rules. To be clear, this book is made up of reference to historical facts and is not a novel.

Much of the book is taken up with lists such as how much they ate and of what (6 bulls, 3 pigs, 25 swans in a day etc.) and descriptions of clothing and jewelry. At times this was tedious, especially in the first part of the book. The second half has fewer lists, but more descriptions of clothing.

I'd recommend this if you're a diehard Tudor enthusiast, but if you're looking for a novel like "The Other Boleyn Girl", give this a pass.

Interesting listen heavy on lists and descriptions

I loved the amount of detail talked about. Things you don’t see explored in other Tudor books.

If you are interested in all the details of the clothing, food and culture of the Tudor courts from Henry VII to Elizabeth I, this is for you. My only criticism is that I wish the author was a little more objective in her description of the personalities of certain queens by noting that the sources may have been prejudiced due to their allegiances, as we know history is written by the victors and they are mostly male.

Tudorphile must-read!

A great read and a history lesson! I couldn’t stop reading.

The performance was excellent, the story was filled with relationships and the characters were well defined.
