Description

Dublin, 1918: three days in a maternity ward at the height of the Great Flu. A small world of work, risk, death and unlooked-for love, by the best-selling author of The Wonder and Room.

In an Ireland doubly ravaged by war and disease, Nurse Julia Power works at an understaffed hospital in the city center, where expectant mothers who have come down with the terrible new flu are quarantined together. Into Julia’s regimented world step two outsiders - Doctor Kathleen Lynn, on the run from the police, and a young volunteer helper, Bridie Sweeney.

In the darkness and intensity of this tiny ward, over three days, these women change each other’s lives in unexpected ways. They lose patients to this baffling pandemic, but they also shepherd new life into a fearful world. With tireless tenderness and humanity, carers and mothers alike somehow do their impossible work.

In The Pull of the Stars, Emma Donoghue once again finds the light in the darkness in this new classic of hope and survival against all odds.

Tedious details

Although I loved Emma Donoghue’s previous books—Room and Akin, I found this novel to be rather tedious with its extreme detail. Perhaps interesting to a midwife or nurse. Listening to to it in Audio where every single word is read made it a lot longer. I stuck with it as I enjoyed the reader but it could have used more of the nurse’s personal life. Room took place mainly in one room, and this book took place in one room with 2 or 3 patients 99% of the time as well. Perhaps this is a challenge Ms. Donoghue likes to take on? I would have liked to hear more about this flu and more details as to how it affected Ireland and more about the nurse’s background .

In a Nutshell

This is 2020 in a nutshell. This book is prefect to read during the worldwide pandemic. it was interesting to see the similarities between past and present(2020). The characters were interesting, story was great, narrator was the best I heard in awhile. Happy Listening

a good read

I found it slow at first, but totally enjoyed it. A bit gory in places, but truthful.

Wonderful ride, a “page turner”

Wow! What a great story. Great narrator. Made for irresistible late night listening. What does one call a “page turner” in the age of audible? It’s that. Succinct, moving, interesting. Loved it.

I feel as if I bore witness to this emotional canvas of life in times influenza.

With every word, I was drawn into the room, my senses assaulted with the reality of life, selflessness, pure love, and death. It was at once uplifting, painful and achingly true. This is a masterpiece and a celebration of generations of Irish authors - thank you Emma Donoghue and Emma Lowe- who have exquisitely captured humanity at its best and worst.

Pertinent

Listening to this during a pandemic is certainly a different experience. Finishing this book qualifies you to receive a midwife certificate, though the story takes a dip once all the babies are delivered. The narrator sings poorly even when the book says it is supposed to be good.
