First came the news that a flying saucer had landed in Iowa. Then came the announcement that the whole thing was a hoax. End of story. Case closed.

Except that two agents of the most secret intelligence agency in the US government were on the scene and disappeared without reporting in. And four more agents who were sent in also disappeared. So the head of the agency and his two top agents went in and managed to get out with their discovery: an invasion is underway by slug-like aliens who can touch a human and completely control his or her mind. What the humans know, they know. What the slugs want, no matter what, the human will do. And most of Iowa is already under their control.

Sam Cavanaugh was one of the agents who discovered the truth. Unfortunately, that was just before he was taken over by one of the aliens and began working for the invaders, with no will of his own. And he has just learned that a high official in the Treasury Department is now under control of the aliens. Since the Treasury Department includes the Secret Service, which safeguards the president of the United States, control of the entire nation is near at hand.

The story is great. Although dated, it still hangs together and was the inspiration for much subsequent work. The plot is very well thought out and hung with for a long time.

The reading is alright, but the reader's attempt to handle a key alluring female character takes effort to appreciate.

Anything done by Robert A. Heinlein is A classic,stunning and amazingly accurate in the sciense, as for the fiction it is delicious and pushes the boundries of our mind!

Some concepts wet ahead of its time and the book started off strong but honestly it quickly fizzled out for me.

That didn’t sound like Bronson Pinchot to me. His voice has lowered a lot over the years. His portrayal of the main character was first rate but needed help with female characters for sure.

While I enjoyed the movie many years after I read the book (sometime in the late 1960s - the one on my shelf is a replacement from the 80s) the changes weakened the story, and the book, through dated in its 1950s vision of the future, is still a gripping read - or listen. RAH had a way of making technological advances (flying cars, laser pistols, health care, home appliances) seem ordinary and commonplace without going into details.

I found it sort of boring. not one of Robert a Heinlein's best I don't think

I read this books years ago and remembered loving it. I think I would have enjoyed it more reading a physical copy again as I did not love this reader. He did female voices very poorly and a lot of his sort of side character voices were frankly weird. All kinda slow and drawling.

The story itself is a classic. In many ways Heinlein was ahead of his time. The sexism is overt yet you also get the sense that the author himself didn’t necessarily believe it, only wrote it because it’s what was expected.

It’s an exciting plot with lots of twists. Truly this author is one of the fathers of modern sci fi. Much better than say the likes of Asimov who wouldn’t know a descriptive adjective or a diverse cast if they slapped him in the face.

A classic Heinlein sci-fi novel. Like most of his novels, there’s a lot of misogyny, and two dimensional female characters, but if you can chalk that up to the book being a product of its time, an just enjoy the story anyway, it’s enjoyable. Gets going pretty much right away. The narrator was cringey at doing women’s voices, especially the principal woman’s voice

Could not finish because of the terrible narrators female renderings. It was like finger nails on a blackboard.
