Description

In the future, the world is at war. For the last decade, King Lazuli of the Eastern Empire has systematically taken over the world. No one knows much about him other than a series of impossible facts: he cannot die, he has not aged since the conflict began, and he wants to rule the world.

All Serenity Freeman has known is bloodshed. War has taken away her mother, her home, her safety. As the future emissary of the Western United Nations, the last autonomous region of the globe, she is responsible for forging alliances where she can.

Surrender is on the horizon. The king can taste it; Serenity feels it deep within her bones. There is no other option. Now the two must come face to face. For Serenity, that means confronting the man who's taken everything from her. For the king, it means meeting the one woman he can't conquer. But when they meet, something happens. Cruelty finds redemption.

Only in war, everything comes with a price. Especially love.

Good story, terrible narration

It's too bad the audible version of this story is so badly narrated, I really dislike when a good story is ruined with bad narration. I will be purchasing the rest of the series on kindle as I can't listen to that women's voice for 2 more books.
Good story but I would heavily recommend the kindle or book version.

Disappointed...

I really enjoyed the Bargainer series from the same autor so I try this one but I was disappointed 😔
The Bargainer is much better. I’m ok with « love at first sight » but I didn’t like the male character. He is twisted and not in a good way. I don’t want to spoil but I don’t understand this character and when you think it’s improving... He does something worth... I lost interest.

This narrator....

Any additional comments?

Love the series, happy they made it into an audio book, but I really wish they had picked a different narrator. It's like all of her sentences trail off and don't feel completed. I know this sounds crazy, but it's almost like she's trying to sound sly. Like, I could picture her reading this with her eyes narrowed and looking around shiftily.

Horrible Performance

I couldn't even finish the audiobook because the narrator took a long, loud breath at the end of every single sentence. I went back and read the book on my Kindle and loved it! The story is great, just like Thalassa's other work. It's just a shame the terrible narration ruined it.

Love this Series

This series is amazing from start to finish. I love the readers and how they give a good description on the characters, looks and influential power of each individual. Will read and listen again and again.

Great story, horrible narration.<br />

Love all of Laura Thalassa's work, even her earlier writings. I bought this book at a discount because there was no way I'd pay full price for that narration. The narrator has to some how be related to William Shatner because she has the same inflection he added to his famous Star Trek character. I would recommend reading this book instead of listening to it until it gets rerecorded.

Entertaining Book

I like the history, for moments gave me a mix emotion between the characters, what she should be feeling and what not. But like I mention I enjoyed very much, the only thing I would change is the narrator is very annoying how she breath like she is running out of air of having a sexual experience.

Really disappointed...

Seems like some kind of cross between Hunger Games and Beauty and the Beast, only it isn't very well written. One-dimensional characters with simple motivations, and a heroine that displays every single treat of any YA-heroine ever. "I have never realised that I'm pretty before." But of course she is. "I can't possibly impress the king who has known so many women," and he swoons the second she enters the room. Not very credible.

Serenity is simple, and appears more like a stubborn teenager than a heroine, who keeps repeating that she hates the king because he killed her parents at the same time she is physically attracted to him. Terrible portrayal of Stockholm Syndrome. From their first meeting, she's fangirling about the king in narration and spitting in his face in dialogue. He rapes her, and she enjoys it. The narrator even goes so far as to explain away her anger at him for killing her family as sexual frustration. And she keeps repeating the word "king" so many times it's like the author uses it to impress the reader of his power.

The king is supposed to be really evil, and yet the only thing he cares about is her. He's lived forever, and never cared about a thing, but when this teenager shows up, he automatically falls in love with her. Nah.

The narration lacks a lot of descriptive parts, and it feels as if the story rushes ahead, making it hard to follow, picturing places and people, and simply ticks off people and places and dialogue, with very little detail.

And the narrator reads every. single. sentence. with the same intonation and rhythm, and exhales hoarsely at the end of every sentence, which is extremely annoying and makes the story even worse. And her French accent is terrible.

Sort of sorry that I spent a credit on this.

I STILL love Laura Thalassa!

This story was incredible. I wasn't sure if I'd like it - still waiting around for the 3rd book in the Vanishing Girl trilogy - but I loved it. Can not wait to find out what happens next.

So much better than expected!

I almost didn’t read this book because the reviews were just mediocre but I love everything else this author has written so decided to give this a try. I am so glad I did! It was so amazing, intense, heart shattering, a crazy cliffhanger. I can’t wait to start the next one!

Took me a while to get used to the narrator, but once I did, she was fantastic.

Fast paced, engaging and keeps you hanging...

In a future world the world is at war. The Eastern Empire controls most of the planet with the Western United Nations being the last hold out. However surrender is in the air and Serenity is sent with her father to represent the WUN in peace talks. However the King of the Eastern Empire has other ideas... and Serenity is not sure how she feels about it all, as this is the man who caused her mother to be killed.

Fast paced listen, this New Adult book kept me engaged throughout. I enjoyed the world building and the tension between the main characters.

If you hate cliffhangers then avoid this book.
