Description
The battle between vicious spirits and strong-willed queens that started in the award-winning The Queen of Blood and continued in the powerful The Reluctant Queen comes to a stunning conclusion in The Queen of Sorrow, the final volume of Sarah Beth Durst’s Queens of Renthia trilogy.
Queen Daleina has yearned to bring peace and prosperity to her beloved forest home - a hope that seemed doomed when neighboring forces invaded Aratay. Now, with the powerful Queen Naelin ruling by her side, Daleina believes that her dream of ushering in a new era can be realized, even in a land plagued by malevolent nature spirits who thirst for the end of human life.
And then Naelin’s children are kidnapped by spirits.
Nothing is more important to her than her family, and Naelin would rather watch the world burn than see her children harmed. Blaming the defeated Queen Merecot of Semo for the kidnapping, Naelin is ready to start a war - and has the power to do it.
But Merecot has grander plans than a bloody battle with her southern neighbors. Taking the children is merely one step in a plot to change the future of all Renthia, either by ending the threat of spirits once and for all ... or plunging the world into chaos.

Lovely Ending
I thought this was a beautiful conclusion for both Daleina and Naelin. Not only was I enraptured by the entire story, but I felt things tied together in an absolutely lovely way. Khristine Hvam once again captured the individuality of each character, seamlessly transitioning from one to another while bringing each personality to life. A lovely end to a truly unique trilogy.

Cannot make up my mind
I really liked the two previous books and was happy to start the third. That said, I cannot decide whether I liked it or not.
However, one thing is for certain: it would have taken me much much longer to read that book than to listen to it. As my hands are busy while I listen to my audiobooks, I can't always pause whenever the book gets boring or annoying. So, this time, with my hands covered in paint, I "had" to keep on listening despite getting very much annoyed by one of the main characters.
I swear, I cannot stand that women. And even though K. Hvam gives a great performance as always, I whished frequently throughout the book that I could jump a few pages ahead in order to get rid of that Reluctant Queen. She's annoying as hell and doesn't grow much since she's introduced in book two.
She is not the only character who isn't growing, evolving, throughout the series. Which is disappointing as there cleary is room for them to grow. There's also room for more explaining and developing the land, the history of Renthia; but it never comes. Not as much as it could anyway...
I really liked some parts of the main story (even though I like the two previous books way better) but the ending feels rushed and unpolished, with new characters popping out of nowhere.
I'm pretty sure you cannot be entirely satisfied with the ending of book two but I can't decide whether I would advise you to read book three... It could have been great, but in the end it's meh.

A powerful end to a wonderful series.
I feel this series was under the radar, but definitely worth the read (or listen.) The Queen of Sorrows is the final book in the trilogy. Renthia is a land built by spirits, but run by humans. The spirits inherently hate humans and wish to kill all humans, so each kingdom has a queen who has power over the spirits. The kingdom of Aratay has two recognized queens, Daleina and Naelin. After a short war with Queen Merecot of Semo, they are looking for peace in their kingdom, but that is not to be. Naelin’s children are kidnapped by spirits and given up for dead by everyone but Naelin. As she searches to find her children, Daleina must work harder to keep the people of Aratay safe from the spirits. There is adventure, magic, politics, strategy, and a dash of romance. It is important to read (or listen) to the first two books in the series as a reader (or listener) would quickly be lost in the world of Renthia without prior knowledge. For those who have read (or listened) to the first two in the series, this is a fitting end. Questions about the reasons the spirits are so hostile are answered along with the motivations behind Aratay’s enemies. Khristine Hvam does an amazing job voicing this audio book, and has become one of my “go-to” voice actors.
