Description

NATIONAL BEST SELLER • A NEW YORK TIMES BEST CRIME NOVEL OF THE YEAR • GMA BUZZ PICK • “A bravura feat of storytelling...daring and completely satisfying.”—James Patterson, #1 best-selling author

A PULSE-POUNDING PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER ABOUT A SERIAL KILLER NARRATED BY THOSE CLOSEST TO HIM: HIS 13-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER, HIS GIRLFRIEND—AND THE ONE VICTIM HE HAS SPARED

"Intelligent and suspenseful."—Paul Tremblay, author of The Cabin at the End of the World

“All…of the expected suspense and psychological tension, but offering a story about women—the ones who didn’t know the evil that lurked within, the ones who tried to placate or fight but still perished, the ones who might actually survive. Haunting but never prurient…truly unforgettable.”—Alafair Burke, author of The Wife

Aidan Thomas is a hard-working family man and a somewhat beloved figure in the small upstate New York town where he lives. He’s the kind of man who always lends a hand and has a good word for everyone. But Aidan has a dark secret he’s been keeping from everyone in town and those closest to him. He’s a kidnapper and serial killer. Aidan has murdered eight women and there’s a ninth he has earmarked for death: Rachel, imprisoned in a backyard shed, fearing for her life.

When Aidan’s wife dies, he and his thirteen-year-old daughter Cecilia are forced to move. Aidan has no choice but to bring Rachel along, introducing her to Cecilia as a “family friend” who needs a place to stay. Aidan is betting on Rachel, after five years of captivity, being too brainwashed and fearful to attempt to escape. But Rachel is a fighter and survivor, and recognizes Cecilia might just be the lifeline she has waited for all these years. As Rachel tests the boundaries of her new living situation, she begins to form a tenuous connection with Cecilia. And when Emily, a local restaurant owner, develops a crush on the handsome widower, she finds herself drawn into Rachel and Cecilia’s orbit, coming dangerously close to discovering Aidan’s secret.

Told through the perspectives of Rachel, Cecilia, and Emily, The Quiet Tenant explores the psychological impact of Aidan’s crimes on the women in his life—and the bonds between those women that give them the strength to fight back. Both a searing thriller and an astute study of trauma, survival, and the dynamics of power, The Quiet Tenant is an electrifying debut thriller by a major talent.

Well written terrifying story

A situation you would never wish yourself or anyone to be in. Written and narrated in a way that exposes how easy it could happen. Applause for all the narration - gripping.

Good until the end

This kept me interested throughout the entire book, I liked the different point of views. Where it fell short for me was the ending. I needed more from the main characters ending. It felt rushed to me and left me feeling disappointed with how it was left.

Suspenseful. But underwhelming

Lots of on the edge of your seat moments. And some really dissapointing elements. So much could have been done with this kind of story. It’s missing so much back story that you want to scream.
These characters could have had so much more. But…. It also wasn’t boring. You wanted to know what happened and you’re yearning for more.
It’s one of those stories you wanted to be great. But kinda falls in the ending.
I’d have developed the characters more deeply and wished for more background on the characters that only show up for a chapter or a moment.
Narration was wonderful. It just didn’t show up enough.

Good suspenseful moments

There was some good suspense a bit like Stephen King’s Misery, but somehow the characters were too weak and flimsy to care deeply about whether they lived or died, like when you see victims in a horror movie who keep tripping and making stupid choices while being chased. Still, the author’s skill in building suspense is masterful enough to keep you going.

Characters utterly unconvincing

Not only was this story anticlimactic, but the characters acted in ways that I simply can’t believe people in those situations would.

Emily is annoying and useless. Maybe underdeveloped? She wasn’t written as a particularly nosy, suspicious or unhinged personality. But going to his house and letting herself in? Knowing his daughter lived there and the “cousin” was inside? Later she went into the basement? For what? All she wanted was a relationship with him. She wouldn’t go into the basement just because the “cousin” came up. She makes no sense at all.

The Victim is ok but for someone locked in a shed for five years she adjusts pretty quickly. No talk of adjusting to light or much of anything really. How could someone like that “pass” at the dinner table? Come on now. She also behaved in a bizarre way.. “I am doing this for Cecilia”.. why? She wouldn’t need Cecilia to go with her. She could go in her own and get Cecelia help which seems obvious to me and what makes the most sense. But then the book would be over. So…

The Killer is ridiculous. No way he could control all the variables keeping her in the house. How big is the house? Why can she hear Cecilia walking on the stairs at night but Cecelia can’t hear rape every night? Cecelia doesn’t know she is in the house the whole time yet she never sees her come or go? He says they can all watch TV together and she can watch the Cecilia? There is no way. It makes no sense.

All in all it just didn’t hit and was eyerollingly annoying.

Utterly Boring

What a terrible book. There are 1-2 minute chapters pertaining to the killer, doing killing. The rest of the chapters are told by a single victim who lives in this guy’s house and goes on and on about her past life. Awful.
