Description

A MOST ANTICIPATED BOOK OF THE YEAR A USA TODAY BESTSELLER A brilliantly funny novel about friends, lovers, Ireland in chaos, and a young woman desperately trying to manage all three

“O'Donoghue deepens the familiar coming-of-age premise with riveting moral complications." —
People

"If you’ve ever been unsure what to do with your degree in English; if you’ve ever wondered when the rug-buying part of your life will start...if you’ve ever loved the wrong person, or the right person at the wrong time…In short, if you’ve ever been young, you will love
The Rachel Incident like I did.” —Gabrielle Zevin, New York Times best-selling author of Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow

Rachel is a student working at a bookstore when she meets James, and it’s love at first sight. Effervescent and insistently heterosexual, James soon invites Rachel to be his roommate and the two begin a friendship that changes the course of both their lives forever.  Together, they run riot through the streets of Cork city, trying to maintain a bohemian existence while the threat of the financial crash looms before them.

When Rachel falls in love with her married professor, Dr. Fred Byrne, James helps her devise a reading at their local bookstore, with the goal that she might seduce him afterwards. But Fred has other desires. So begins a series of secrets and compromises that intertwine the fates of James, Rachel, Fred, and Fred’s glamorous, well-connected, bourgeois wife. Aching with unrequited love, shot through with delicious, sparkling humor, The Rachel Incident is a triumph.

Ce que les critiques en disent

A MOST ANTICIPATED BOOK: VOGUE, ELECTRIC LIT, SHE READS • FEATURED AS A SUMMER READING PICK BY GOOP, NEW YORK POST, NYLON, SCARY MOMMY, AND NEWSDAY

"O’Donoghue [has] got my full attention....The Rachel Incident offers a tender reflection on those 20-something friendships that leave a permanent imprint....One of the many lovable things about this novel is O’Donoghue’s kindhearted perspective on the awkwardness of the college years, that weird period when you’re self-conscious enough to be embarrassed but not quite self-controlled enough to feign maturity....But it’s the sustained insight of The Rachel Incident that keeps the plot rushing forward. O’Donoghue has a sharp eye for the tumultuous life of a young woman struggling to figure out who she is....She allows her heroine to be deeply uncomfortable with the practice of abortion and just as deeply outraged that the procedure was not available in Ireland. It’s that social complexity that raises this engaging comedy of manners into something more profoundly satisfying....O’Donoghue has found a way to tell this story in scenes both heartbreaking and funny. She illuminates these Irish lives with a light all her own." —Ron Charles, The Washington Post

"Books by Irish women writers are hot these days, and this novel is on fire. It's about a young Rachel caught between two Jameses and a Fred--one's a gay coworker who becomes both housemate and best friend, one's a new maybe-boyfriend, and one's her literature professor, whom she also fancies, until she finds him in a compromising position with James No. 1. O'Donoghue deepens the familiar coming-of-age premise with riveting moral complications." People

"A smart, funny, and completely captivating look at how the lives of two young people in Cork, Ireland become intertwined forever thanks to shared dreams, mistakes, and some very dark secrets. When Rachel and James meet working at a bookstore, neither knows that their wild, carefree youth will change the rest of their lives, but in the author's expert hands readers are treated to seeing the two fumble toward adulthood—no matter who gets in their way." Loved it

A great listen, highly recommended if you enjoyed Sally Rooney (but I’d say this is more accessible and funny)

I laughed, I panged, I relished

The writing is beautiful, the characters are palpable and the audio narration is perfect for this Irish woman’s story. My favourite of the year so far.

raw and remarkable

There is a realness in the writing that makes this book stick to your bones long beyond finishing it. Rachel and both Jameses are characters that you can dare to dislike in moments because they are so loveable and so realistic. Haven't we all had those relationships that exist between unspoken boundaries? The narrator was the perfect choice, too. Hope to see more come from the author. Shelving it next to "Normal People" as an overall favourite.

Deeply complex, heartfelt and funny.

Loved the characters and the world of this book. The narrator brings it all life. Will listen again! One of the best books I’ve read in a long time.

Worth All the Buzz

5 solid stars for The Rachel Incident by Caroline O'Donoghue. This book covers some heavy and timely topics specific to women in Ireland and everywhere like women's rights and recession and homosexuality and friendship. But interwoven with that are moments of genuine compassion and love and humor. The character development and the relationships are written with such care and humanity, you will feel like you know these people. And because they are really people we interact with every day - you probably do. I was so impressed by how this author took nothing really- just two friends in their 20's and made it into something heartbreaking and unforgettable. It was just so beautifully done. I know it is the book everyone is talking about - and this one is worth the buzz.

Delicious, couldn’t put it down.

There’s something magic in this story. It’s so ordinary, yet somehow extraordinary. I will recommend it to everyone!

A complex and emotive story

Rachel is at times so unlikable and at others a great character to cheer on. This story was surprisingly addictive to listen to and you want the best for all the characters.

Someone make the movie, please!

I'm glad I took a chance on this book--the publisher's summary made it sound bland and ordinary and certainly doesn't do it justice. Caroline O'Donoghue has the Irish gift for drawing characters with words, and she uses it here to take us along as her protagonist blunders through early adulthood and learns a thing or two about life, love, and herself. There's so much to appreciate about O'Donoghue's writing--the fey observations, the offhand humor, the restraint she uses when the story takes its dramatic turns. And Tara Flynn's narration is perfection.

As soon as I finished the book, I went looking for more from both author and narrator.

Kept me interested though a strange story

I kept returning to the audiobook because I was interested in Rachel’s story. She seems to be talking to her “reader.” Unfortunately, there was not a single character that I liked much. Liking and caring for Rachel, in particular, would be a welcome change.

The reviews hooked me

The reviews on this book were very impressive. I thought I was going to like it more than I did. It was boring at times. The best part of the book were the last few chapters.
