À propos de cet audio

In December 1937, in the capital of China, one of the most brutal massacres in the long annals of wartime barbarity occurred. The Japanese army swept into the ancient city of Nanking and within weeks not only looted and burned the defenseless city but systematically raped, tortured and murdered more than 300,000 Chinese civilians. Amazingly, the story of this atrocity- one of the worst in world history- continues to be denied by the Japanese government.

The Rape of Nanking tells the story from three perspectives: that of the Japanese soldiers who performed it; of the Chinese civilians who endured it; and finally of a group of Europeans and Americans who refused to abandon the city and were able to create a safety zone that saved almost 300,000 Chinese. It was Iris Chang who discovered the diaries of the German leader of this rescue effort, John Rabe, whom she calls the "Oskar Schindler of China." A loyal supporter of Adolf Hitler, but far from the terror planned in his Nazi-controlled homeland, he worked tirelessly to save the innocent from slaughter.

such an important story. i had some complaints of it jumping around and getting confused in the timeline but didn't take away from the disgusting horrible acts people have done and to hear the attempts of a countries continued attitude of just sweeping it under the rug. we are living in a crazy world. maybe we are crazy to think it should be sane!

important

this is an unflinching account of the Japanese terror on the Chinese at the start of the second world war. for too long the war has been looked at as a 1939 to 1945 European domain and important incidents like this have been publicly forgotten. overall def required history to understand not what the Japanese were capable of, but what humans will readily do if they are given the reason and circumstances.

harsh but necessary

This was a heavy book, but none the less a great insight into the human psyche. Real world accounts of an absolute tragedy and insights to how individuals and an entire military population could commit such heinous acts. I think books like this should be a mandatory read in order to keep these brutally harsh lessons of history alive so that we can identify the warning signs of them happing again in the future.

Heavy, but necessary

A well researched telling of piece of history that has been downplayed and covered up for decades. A scholarly work representing several viewpoints from eyewitness diaries to victim accounts and including official responses, you'll be hard pressed to find a better representation of what actually happened in this subdued piece of history. For an academic work, it is surprising readable. I highly recommend for anyone curious enough to want to understand key points in history.

A Definitely Work on the Nanking Massacre

I found the book very interesting and engaging as it did had a well written 'prequel' of the events leading up to Nanking, in addition, to good closure with following up with some of the witnesses and political environment in China and Japan. Very informative!

Prior to listening to The Rape of Nanking, I had only heard of the atrocities one time. This book sheds lights on the horrors that truly occurred.

The author goes into great detail not only about the atrocities that happened in Nanking, but the lives of those involved in committing the acts and those important life saving foreigners who saved thousands of Chinese lives.

Horrifyingly captivating

An amazing account in the atrocities human beings are capable of. Important lessons for all of humankind so we may never repeat the horrors committed by the Imperial Japanese.

Must read for every person

I just was oblivious to this, and rightly so as it seems to be an unspoken story. Thank you for all you efforts and work Iris! So much respect for you.

I have to plead ignorance of the Rape of Nanking and realize just how important this story really is. Thank you, Iris Chang for your factual and informative research into this stain on human kind. We all need to take a moment to pray for all of those that suffered as a result of the Japanese actions that caused the Rape of Nanking. I for one, will never forget what I have learned from this incredible story of human suffering. My heart is heavy.

A must read for anyone interested in human suffering and retribution
