Deadly storms have ravaged Mina’s homeland for generations. Floods sweep away entire villages, while bloody wars are waged over the few remaining resources. Her people believe the Sea God, once their protector, now curses them with death and despair. In an attempt to appease him, each year a beautiful maiden is thrown into the sea to serve as the Sea God’s bride, in the hopes that one day the “true bride” will be chosen and end the suffering.

As the only Second Daughter born in centuries, Red has one purpose - to be sacrificed to the Wolf in the Wood in the hope he'll return the world's captured gods. Red is almost relieved to go. Plagued by a dangerous power she can't control, at least she knows that in the Wilderwood, she can't hurt those she loves. Again. But the legends lie. The Wolf is a man, not a monster. Her magic is a calling, not a curse. And if she doesn't learn how to use it, the monsters the gods have become will swallow the Wilderwood - and her world - whole.

So many stories begin the same way: With a prophecy. A chosen one. And the inevitable quest to slay a villain, save the kingdom, and fulfill a grand destiny. But this is not that kind of story. It does begin with a prophecy: A child will rise to defeat the Eternal Khan, a cruel immortal god-king, and save the kingdom. And that prophecy did anoint a hero, Jian, raised since birth in luxury and splendor, and celebrated before he has won a single battle.

Description
June Hur, critically acclaimed author of The Silence of Bones and The Forest of Stolen Girls, returns with The Red Palace - a third evocative, atmospheric historical mystery perfect for fans of Courtney Summers and Kerri Maniscalco.
To enter the palace means to walk a path stained in blood....
Joseon (Korea), 1758. There are few options available to illegitimate daughters in the capital city, but through hard work and study, 18-year-old Hyeon has earned a position as a palace nurse. All she wants is to keep her head down, do a good job, and perhaps finally win her estranged father's approval.
But Hyeon is suddenly thrust into the dark and dangerous world of court politics when someone murders four women in a single night, and the prime suspect is Hyeon's closest friend and mentor. Determined to prove her beloved teacher's innocence, Hyeon launches her own secret investigation.
In her hunt for the truth, she encounters Eojin, a young police inspector also searching for the killer. When evidence begins to point to the Crown Prince himself as the murderer, Hyeon and Eojin must work together to search the darkest corners of the palace to uncover the deadly secrets behind the bloodshed.

Page turning murder mystery
An exciting page turner. The author, June Hur, knows a lot about the Joseon dynasty, and it looks like most of her books are based in this time period. This is the first book I’ve listened to by this other. It is also the first time I listened to a murder mystery book. It was very exciting to investigate the case with the main characters, yearning to learn more. It’s not too scary, otherwise I would not read or enjoy it. It does describe wounds and deaths, but it’s not done in a way to terrify you. The book is not too long, and very easy to finish in just a couple days.
Having studied some Korean, lived in Korea and watched k-dramas, I could imagine all the palaces, outfits, and characters well. I almost wish I could see it all in a movie, too. I loved that the book included Korean words and references such as “ye/예,” a formal yes reply, the hierarchical terms between the characters such as “seja jeoha/세자 저하,” crown prince and “naeuri/나으리”l, a way to refer to people of higher status but same daegam/age, and so on. I’m not sure if this would really make sense to someone without some knowledge of Korean language and culture without explanation though. I think these references add a lot of context and information in the story, and are important to understand. Or perhaps it’s not vital to understand, rather, one misses the “full experience.”
I loved how at the end, the author explains the historical facts her book was based on, and her intention in how she chose to write the story. She also mentions where to learn more about the historical events. She is clearly very passionate and made a lot of efforts researching to make the story as realistic as possible, while still honouring it’s fiction genre. She wanted to respect Korean history as well she could as as part of the Korean diaspora.

Loved it!
This book was refreshing to listen to. I was born in Korea and watched k-dramas, including Korean historical dramas most of my life. Most of the dramas and histories that I watched and learned as a child, they focused on glorified kings and princes. But this book was refreshing because it did not portray the prince as a hero nor a god-like figure. He was a flawed individual who needed help including his father’s love which he never gets. I especially appreciated the author’s comment at the very end of the book. The connection between the two main characters were lovely and the ending was fitting coming from Korean historical fiction. The writing was smooth and it flowed well. The narrator’s voice was perfect fit for this book. Her voice was calm, gentle, and yet strong. This was a really good read!

Compelling historical mystery
Simply incredible historical mystery set in Korea’s Joseon dynasty in the 1750s. The main character is a palace nurse, the daughter of a rejected concubine and a lord who will not claim her. She’d worked her way to the highest possible position a woman of her status can achieve, then her fellow nurses are murdered and her mentor is blamed. The palace is dangerous, the city isn’t much better, and then there’s a young police inspector who listens to her, hides and helps her. Stronger together, they’ll risk everything to learn the truth. It’s gripping, beautiful, clever, detailed, heart-breaking, and swoon-worthy. Highly, highly recommended.

Such an Awesome Listen!!
My college age daughters and myself, we absolutely enjoyed this book! The story was captivating and the narration was so good! The narrator, Michelle H. Lee, was so good! I cannot say enough about her performance. I am very interested in listening to other works of hers and from the author, June Hur. Such great and descriptive writing. We are not Korean but we truly enjoy the Korean culture, our friends, K-Drama, and my daughters really like K-Pop. Because we have immersed ourselves in the Korean culture, we were able to follow the story extremely well. Great from beginning to end!

Impactful and Tender Historical Mystery
This is the first June Hur book that has truly stuck with me and made a lasting impression. The writing is phenomenal and the narration is excellent. The story develops so naturally, and I feel like I learned an extraordinary amount of history while reading this, without feeling overwhelmed or the story feeling bogged downed. There is a touching sweet romance and a gripping, thrilling mystery. Neither interfere with the other, but each work together seamlessly. Highly recommend.

Great book
I had a few of the author’s videos come up on my Instagram feed and was intrigued. The book was a great read. The story was engaging and the characters felt full and real. I think I’ll be checking out June Hur’s other books now.
The narration was also great Michelle Lee really brought the characters to life.

I was pleasantly surprised how good this was.
I usually read detective sorties in the hard boiled genre, Chandler, Hammett, Spanelli. However I didn’t expect to like this story as much as I did. The author did a great job with historical research and crafted a great mystery. The detail she put into this shows and it is a great murder mystery and a great piece of historical fiction. 10/10
