Late in 2004, Maggie Nelson was looking forward to the publication of her book, Jane: A Murder, a narrative in verse about the life and death of her aunt, who had been murdered 35 years before. Over the months that followed, Nelson found herself attending the trial with her mother and reflecting anew on the aura of dread and fear that hung over her family and childhood - an aura that derived not only from the terrible facts of her aunt's murder but also from her own complicated journey through sisterhood, daughterhood, and girlhood.

Present experiences of a story long past
It’s kind of unimaginable…. you decide to research and write a book about your aunt who was murdered by an already incarcerated serial killer, as just as it is about to go to print, the police inform you they have a new suspect based on DNA. Whaaat? Just as you were about to put that aspect of your life behind you. Wowza. Interesting tale, combined with the author’s biography. Often grim, but up close and personal.
