Description

He's back! The long-awaited return of the most exciting new commercial fantasy writer of the 21st century.

After their adventures on the high seas, Locke and Jean are brought back to earth with a thump. Jean is mourning the loss of his lover and Locke must live with the fallout of crossing the all-powerful magical assassins, the Bonds Magi. It is a fallout that will pit both men against Locke's own long-lost love.

Sabetha is Locke's childhood sweetheart, the love of Locke's life, and now it is time for them to meet again. Employed on different sides of a vicious dispute between factions of the Bonds, Sabetha has just one goal: to destroy Locke forever.

The Gentleman Bastard sequence has become a literary sensation in fantasy circles and now, with the third book, Scott Lynch is set to seal that success.

Ploy, Oh Ploy!

Schemes upon schemes, undone or outshone by other schemes, and grand origin story pieces kept me riveted. Michael Page is a master of character voices, giving the story even more life.

I will read anything with Locke and Jean

The actual main plot of this book is pretty negligible, but the character work is soooooooooooo good

Praiseworthy Worldbuilding. Why In Book Three?

This storyline really brings together the motivations and personalities of the all-powerful sorcerors known as the "Bond Mages" and enriches the history of the 'Gentleman Bastards' universe - while relating essentially an "average" romance tale.
Scott Lynch tells his story in two timelines: 'Locke Lamora' and one-time lover 'Sabetha "Beth" Belacoros' playfully sparring & scheming to fix an election at the behest of competing Bond Mage factions; and the description of love & misadventure among the Mission Impossible-like elite thief team known as the "Gentleman Bastards" while they put on a play.. set 5 years prior.
There's not much action in either plotline - disappointing given the author's excellence at choreographing combat - but the focus on character development and fleshing out the magical elements in Lynch's realm is acknowledged (although a somewhat awkward mandate for a third book). Unfortunately, I was left unimpressed by the effort.

Strongly in the audiobook's favor, however: this is some of the best narration that I have heard from Michael Page. His timing, emotiveness, and voice-acting are spot on for this book (elements that are occasionally lacking from Mr. Page's performances). His delivery for a key character ('Jean Tannen') after breaking his nose is straight-up brilliant, for example.

Altogether, 'The Republic Of Thieves' is mainly a milquetoast story about frustrated love, but does a marvellous job enriching Scott Lynch's imagined world - actually making me want to read the series again from the start (with the new understanding that this book provides). Regardless, it rates a reasonable 5.5 stars out of 10.

I felt a little disappointed at the end.

The good:
-The performance was SPECTACULAR.
- Loved the dual plot lines
The not so good:
- I feel like it was missing something. Maybe it was a lack of character development? 🧐

Still worth the listen if you read the previous books!

can't wait for the next (and there will be a next)

the details here are fantastic.

very few authors will put the horrible realities of life into a story. I was fully engaged, noticing minor details, and following direct logic.

can't wait for Scott to get better.

Michael Page is amazing but the story was mediocre

Very mediocre story made vastly better by the quality of Michael Page’s narration.

The five year game storyline was slow to get going and was weak. There were no real twists or turns like in the previous two books, more than anything it seemed like it was designed just to through Locke and Beth together.

But interlude storyline was a lot of fun, if a little predictable. The banter was great, Galdo and Caldo were hilarious (don’t know why he killed them in the first book) and all the characters seemed more themselves than they did in the present day story.

Michael Page was brilliant as always.

Excellent narration

I knew it was going to be a good book. The third in the series did not disappoint. Seeing the heart strings of our protagonist pulled felt like it was tugging on my own heart. But best of all was this narrator. He did a really good job separating the voices of character - even changing it to account for injuries and conditions. Excellent audio book - would HIGHLY recommend.
