If a narrator is reading a story with words or names that are from a particular culture, they must look up the names and words to make sure they pronounce it properly. I love the Daevabad trilogy but the main character Manizha in this story, should be pronounce Maneezha, with the zh makes a zsh sound like the French “je”. The author calling a common Persian name I’ve heard all my life incorrectly as well as other names and words that are Arabic or Persian really took away from the entire story for me. I really couldn’t pay attention, let alone enjoy it.

I would sincerely request the entire trilogy or at least this one prequel, to have another version with a narrator who’s familiar with the language, culture, references, etc.

I loved all the books of the Daevabad Trilogy and I was excited to read some more stories about this world. I have to say, however, that I felt like the first parts of this book were not really 'stories', but snippets from the cutting room floor - sort of a deleted scenes reel. And this disappointed me. The love story, for instance between Rustem and Nariye's mother is an important story that we only get glimpses of in the book, and the little snippet about this is good but not a full story. This could easily been expanded into the full love story and tragic ending.
I understand that writers often write parts of a story so that they understand the background of characters and that those parts often are not necessary in the book, but to present them as additional stories is an exaggeration at best. The exception to this is the last two entries. I like the 'alternate' view of Dara teaming up with unlikely partners to pursue his enemy.
I did enjoy hearing about my 'old friends' from Daevabad, but this could have been something better.
I look forward eagerly, however, to Ms. Chakraborty's next book.

I’m a huge fan of the CITY OF BRASS series, so reading more bonus content was an absolute joy. Each scene and short story is beautifully written, magical, emotional, and thrilling. I adored this addition so much and recommend it to all CITY OF BRASS fans!
