Just days after Raynor Winn learns that Moth, her husband of 32 years, is terminally ill, their home is taken away and they lose their livelihood. With nothing left and little time, they make the brave and impulsive decision to walk the 630 miles of the sea-swept South West Coast Path.

Carrying only the essentials for survival on their backs, they live wild in the ancient, weathered landscape of cliffs, sea and sky. Yet through every step, their walk becomes a remarkable journey. The flow of the narrative and the steady and gently emotive voice took me on an inspiring journey. Relatable as a 50year old woman, I think everyone needs such a flattening sabbatical of humble pie. What if? Faith, partnership and enduring spirit lifts you along this hungry journey.

An excellent listen when you get to a place in your life feeling stuck

The concept was a little more captivating than the actual story itself, but nonetheless, entertaining.

Interesting enough

No one is immune from the misfortune that befell these two, but how many of us could face such a dire situation with similar grace! No sugar coating, just honest retelling of a trip and a transformation.

Compelling story!

Absolutely loved the vivid descriptions of nature, and an honest story of overcoming incredible circumstances. I enjoyed it so much. I’m now listening to the book of what happened after the walk (also fantastic) and I’ve downloaded her other book as well.

If you like stories of people over overcoming challenges and finding their strength against all odds, you will love this book!

A story of hope, love, and nature

I didn't realise it was a memoir. At the start of the book with its desperate scenario of Moth and Ray reeling from being losing their home and livelihood and then the next day hearing Moth's devastating diagnosis, I thought this was a heavy handed novel with way too much stacked up against the protagonist. The fact that this is a true story was to me more wild the path they took.

The prose is so descriptive you can hear the birds, the waves, the wind. Normally I fight shy of narrators reading their own books, but Raynor Winn (with her everso so slight lisp and natural country cadence) was an added bonus.

It is both heartbreaking and uplifting. A loving paean to both the South West Coast Path and her husband.

Uplifting Memoir infused with wry humour & pathos

Raynor Winn tells the story of how, at 50 yrs old, she and her husband lose all of their material possessions, including their business. Homeless, and distraught, with no place to go, they decide to walk the 630 mile South West Coastal Path of England. An area that I previously knew nothing about, and that I now want to visit.

I didn't initially love this book. I started out listening to it on audio (narrated by the author), but after getting 3/4 through, my mind kept wandering. I knew that I was missing something important. I stopped and decided to wait until I could read it from the beginning. I decided to travel the journey. I googled images of many landmarks and towns, and I followed along on google maps. This could easily have been a picture book; there is so much geography, history and geology. When I read it, and as I learned more about the English coast, I truly connected with Ray and Moth. As I learned about every village and town, my reading trudged along, but it was a trip worth taking. If you read this book, don't read it too quickly, It's beautifully written; almost poetic and I think it's meant to be savoured.

The author paints amazing pictures of the landscape, but more importantly she vividly describes how they feel every day as they plod along. They start out feeling broken and old. She adds humor when it's appropriate and if you take your time to really walk with them, their galvanizing trek will stick with you and inspire you.

If you enjoy nature and want to learn and be inspired, then I highly recommend this book. Don't plan to rush through it though. Read it and make Google your friend.

Ray narrates beautifully but it's better read

I could not stop listening!! I’d listen in my drives, on my walks, and when I was still. Thank you Reynor, for allowing us to accompany you and Moth.

Intoxicating and inspiring

I found this book quite challenging. Its an interesting story, at times hopeful, but also a bit depressing in the way it describes the reality of homelessness. I think perhaps I would have preferred to read the book because although the author's writing is very descriptive, I didn't find her reading performance to be engaging.

Food for thought
