Description

When discussing the German war crimes of the Second World War, modern histories have focused on the Holocaust. While the Final Solution was a unique and unparalleled horror, German atrocities did not end there. The Nazis terrorized their own citizens, tortured and murdered POWs, and carried out countless executions throughout occupied Europe. Lord Russell of Liverpool was part of the legal team that brought Nazi war criminals to justice, and from this first-hand position, he published the sensational, best-selling The Scourge of the Swastika in 1954. Liverpool shows that the actions of the Third Reich, including the Holocaust, were illegal, not merely immoral.

Brutal

Exceptionally difficult to listen to, but extremely important. One of the most detailed and graphic accounts of Nazi brutality that I have read, tons of facts not found in other books. Based on eye witness accounts and trials after WWII. Read this to honour the dead, understand the history that haunts so many and stand with conviction behind ’never again’.

Incredibly Informative

There is Zero doubt that all sides in a war are guilty of terrible injustices.. but the actions of the Nazis were particularly egregious. Lord Russell of Liverpool punctiliously documents example after example of War Crimes committed by Hitler's forces (executing POWs, reprisal murders of civillians, sinking non-combatant seacraft, and - of course - the Holocaust) - bolstered by documented official orders, eyewitness statements, and court transcripts.

Reader Simon Vance turns in a capable - if unspectacular - performance. His creditable diction, timbre, and cadence are accompanied by a truly praiseworthy didactic tone (Vance is instructing listeners).. but he reads at a legitimately plodding pace (setting playback speed at 1.20X was required to restore a natural-sounding experience).
Still, Audible Studios made a passable choice enlisting Mr. Vance on this project.

Altogether, the book is packed with evidence (remarkable for a work compiled a mere nine years after the war ended). It's well-authenticated with footnotes and references, organized logically, and readable. The book is *absolutely* one-sided (it was roundly condemned after publication in 1954 for being shockingly provocative) - but undeniably edifying. My goal was to learn and that's what I got.
This iteration of 'The Scourge Of The Swastika' merits 8.5 stars out of 10. I feel fortunate to have gotten this book as a 'Plus' selection.. because it would rate a Credit for anyone interested in some of the worst officially-sanctioned events of WWII history.

[ATTN PRODUCERS: A major effort from the author (with the original publication) included compiling photographic evidence. An appended PDF with said images would be invaluable for this audiobook]

Hard to hear but worth a listen

The content is truly dark; it presents the reality of the scene and does not hold back from telling the truth of the events.

Sickening and Depressing

My takeaway from this is that there is no bottom to the depravity of humanity. We will, unfortunately, repeat these horrors until humanity itself no longer exists.
