I love everything this author writes. this one didn't disappoint. Grown-up heroes, attempts at improving communication. interesting setting. I also loved the accents from the narrator and didn't mind his idiosyncratic style, not at 1.5 speed.

I needed a light book that will capture my thoughts and this was perfect. It had everything of what you expect from an old time novel, but it is not old fashioned.
Also, full of sex descriptions that you can just skip or not

Light, funny, smart and wonderful to escape with

The story is excellent, the characters are great, and the relationship between the MCs is believable and has a great arc. If you're already a fan of KJ Charles, you won't be disappointed, but do yourself a favour and get the ebook or paperback, not the audiobook. If this is your first exposure to her work, PLEASE read it or go pick up the Will Darling Adventures audiobooks instead.

I'm not even sure if the problem is the narrator or the editing (I suspect the editing), because I like the variety of voices that he chose and there are bits that sound lovely, but it. is. so. choppy. with..... long .... weird pauses in random.... places. It's less noticeable at higher listening speeds (1.35x), but is still unpleasant.

This is the first KJ Charles book where I have been disappointed in the audiobook - the rest are among my favourites (I could probably listen to the Charm of Magpies and Will Darling series on loop for a week straight and be perfectly happy). I will never to listen to this one again.

The audio editing was quite poor, which is a shame because the narrator is excellent, but you can get used to it sped up.

Looooved the characters, naive and good and evil and loyal, and was intrigued by the corruption plot - very fun read for me!
