Description

New York Times best-selling author Julie Garwood captures the Highland splendor of medieval Scotland in this breathtaking love story. The inspiration for her acclaimed bestseller Ransom, this classic tale is a passionate masterpiece from one of the best-loved storytellers of all time.

Judith Hampton was as beautiful as she was proud and loyal. Her dear Scottish friend from childhood was about to give birth, and Judith had promised to be at her side. But there was another reason for the journey from her bleak English home to the Highlands: to meet the father she had never known, the Laird Maclean. Nothing prepared her, however, for the sight of the Scottish barbarian who was to escort her into his land...Iain Maitland, laird of his clan, a man more powerfully compelling than any she had ever encountered.

In a spirited clash of wills and customs, Judith reveled in the melting bliss of Iain's searching kisses, his passionate caresses. Perplexed by her sprightly defiance, bemused by her tender nature, Iain felt his soul growing into the light and warmth of her love. Surely nothing would wrench her from the affection and trust of Iain and his clan...not even the truth about her father, a devastating secret that could shatter the boldest alliance, and the most glorious of loves!

Scottish Yodas

Loved the story. BUT it was difficult to listen to the various renditions of the male characters voices which all sounded like raspy Yodas, some with a rather sleepy inflection. Sorry but was almost painful to listen to. Still love this author and the dtory

Wonderful

Susan Duerden has such a calming voice. The lilt of her voice is perfect. She does a great job with the men’s voices as well, it’s a great performance for one of my favorite stories.

Nice Historical Highland Romance

I found this book to be well written that kept my interest. I enjoyed the friendships, struggles, and romance throughout the book. I don't understand why many people disliked the narrator but I thought she was good.....not great but good. She whispered when the words said "she whispered" so what was the problem. Anyway I will definately listen to the next book in the series.

Good story, bad narrator

Though I was liking the story and characters, the overall listening experience wasn't an easy one. The narrator draws out the end of every sentence in such a way that once noticed, you can't stop hearing it. Drove me to distraction so I had to stop listening frequently. It turned into an exercise of endurance than anything else. It's a shame because the story good.

Great narrator!

Would you consider the audio edition of The Secret to be better than the print version?

The story was excellent. The narrator was terrific! I listened to another Julie Garwood book with a different narrator, and she did a terrible job on the men's voices. They sounded like croaking frogs not the sexy FBI men they were supposed to be. This narrator was wonderful. The men sounded like men. The accent was also good. I will make sure the narrator is a good one before I buy another book.

What did you like best about this story?

The plot was excellent. The characters were loveable and the story very funny.

What does Susan Duerden bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She did an excellent job. The accent was good and the men sounded like men.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Laugh, laugh, and more laughter!

Any additional comments?

Please give us good narrators. It makes all the difference when it is an audible book.

Good grief! Really...

I will never believe the reviews again! Evidentially people who favor a book are more apt to write a review than those that don't. If you like a Harlequin romance this is for you. The characters are two dimensional simpletons. The narrator has a good reading voice but her female characters voices all sound like little girls and the men's sound like gruff old men except the hero who sounds like a breathy lecher. Sorry I wasted the 2 credits. Believing the reviews I read I purchased the 2nd book at the same time as The Secret. What a waist of time and credits! If you like a book with substance don't bother with this one.

MEDIEVAL HIGHLAND ROMANCE AT IT'S BEST

Oh boy, I'm so easily pleased - just give me a hunky handsome Highland Warrior in a kilt (a must), add some interesting amusing and likeable characters (also necessary) who are all involved in a charming passionate and funny story (preferable), throw in lots of romance and a little sex (an added bonus) then have it written by the gifted and talented Ms Garwood (wow) finally have it brought to life by the many voices of Susan Duerden and then folks...... I'm one happy lass.

Audible - I'm afraid you will be getting an email from me soon begging you (on bended knees if necessary) to carry on with this series and add books 2 Ransom and 3 Shadow Music to your Library very very soon so I can add them to mine.

Worth a credit? Well folks if you're like me and enjoy being mentally transported back in time then that would be a definitely, positively and absolutely YES.

Whats not to like?

Its got everything we love in a romance. A strong woman, a rough tough man who agains his will falls in love. Julie Garwood has long since been one of my favorite historical romance authors. I read this book years ago and was hesitant about listening to it on Audible, but I took the chance and am so glad I did.

Couldn't get past the performance

This is only the second audiobook I have ever abandoned. I wasn't able to make it past the first hour simply because the performance was so bad. The male voices were particularly dreadful. The narrator made all the Scottish men sound like they had head colds. Generally, I enjoy this author so I tried very hard to get past the narration, but I just couldn't do it.

Love the story! not so much the narrator...

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I love the book. It has been one of my favorite Julie Garwood books and one of my re-reads every few years. I bought it to listen to on a trip and could not make it through the first few chapters. story is great but did not care for the narrator

What did you like best about this story?

I love the relationship between Ian and Judith, but the personalities of the secondary characters is what has always sent this book to a 5-star status for me. Both the Secret and Ransom are my favorite J Garwood books.

What didn’t you like about Susan Duerden’s performance?

The author has an English accent which is pleasant and she does character voices well, but I did not care for the speech pattern she uses. It seems that she "upspeaks" a lot of her sentences instead of making sure there is a lot of diversity in her narration. I know that seems trivial, but unfortunately it took away from the story and the composition as a whole.

Awesome story and great performance!

If you could sum up The Secret in three words, what would they be?

Romantic, Sassy, Engaging.

What did you like best about this story?

I love a spirited woman and Judith was beautifully developed with a nice blend of compassion, spirit, and humility. I also enjoyed the humor in the story - many times I laughed out loud! I really loved all the charaters - Ian was strong but tender and so respectful.

Have you listened to any of Susan Duerden’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I haven't listened to her before but I totally enjoyed listening to her and definately look forward to listening to her again.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Definately made me laugh and when I had to put the book on pause, I couldn't wait until the time I could begin to listen again.

Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed this story - my first Julie Garwood book but won't be my last. She writes a great book. I loved the charaters, the romance was very sweet and perfectly (and respectfully) graphic. The narrator only added to the story making it very enjoyable - I didn't want it to end. I wish the next book was avaliable "Ransom" and read by the same narrator!

Absolutely A Refreshing Change!

It is so refreshing to find a historical romance that is not just a bunch of sex scenes strung together around a weak story. It is also rare to find one.

The Secret fits that rare mold.

This story honestly looks at real life on 13th century Scotland, in a funny interesting story that entertains to the last page.

Ian and Judith and all the rest make just the right kind of clan.
