Description

Over 13 months in 1976-1977, four children were abducted in the Detroit suburbs, each of them held for days before their still-warm bodies were dumped in the snow near public roadsides. The Oakland County Child Murders spawned panic across southeast Michigan, triggering the most extensive manhunt in US history. Yet after less than two years, the task force created to find the killer was shut down without naming a suspect.

The case “went cold” for more than 30 years, until a chance discovery by one victim’s family pointed to the son of a wealthy General Motors executive: Christopher Brian Busch, a convicted pedophile, was freed weeks before the fourth child disappeared.

Veteran Detroit News reporter Marney Rich Keenan takes the listener inside the investigation of the still-unsolved murders - seen through the eyes of the lead detective in the case and the family who cracked it open - revealing evidence of a decades-long cover-up of malfeasance and obstruction that denied justice for the victims.

The good and bad of humanity

This book is enormous in detail, yet it’s a matter of being thorough in a 40+ year old story. Set Williams is a saint and obviously one heck of an investigator.
It’s disgusting that money can / could buy you a free pass for raping children and imo all those involved in that should be convicted of manslaughter or worse.
It’s so hard to imagine losing a child, and losing one this way has to be maddening to say the least.
The book and narration can be hard to follow, mainly the who’s who and when and what. Like any story it has some bias, which can lead you deep into misinformation due to the complexity and compounding areas for estimation due to the lack of certainties.
All in all, a story that needs to be told and a great job of explaining such a convoluted tale.

A tough read

I'm an avid fan of true crime stories, but this one was a tough read, I must say. Almost too many details to take concerning the child porn and the suffering these kids went through. It's heart wrenching and sickening. And certainly anger provoking. All in all, the book was well done and the narrator did a good job.

It goes on and on and on.....

This book would be great if it just dealt with the 'Snow killings' and those people involved. It does not. it deals with the snow killings and every crime committed in that area in that decade, as well as every person involved in any of those crimes and the families affected by those crimes and the people investigating those crimes and alllllll of their parents and their grandparents. If you don't listen very intently, you'll find yourself saying, 'Who the heck is he talking about!?' because the author is off telling the life history of someone's grandparents again. There were times I just couldn't stand to listen anymore. I had to stop for a while. Way too many unnecessary details. Then you'll look at your phone and say to yourself, 'I still have 10 hours of this left!?'

Other than that, what happened to those kids is just soul destroying. I found it hard to listen to the narrator go on and on about child pornography.
