À propos de cet audio

In an alternate Renaissance Italy where the church regulates magic and licenses magicians, fiery Fiametta Beneforte wants to be more than her goldsmith-mage father's unpaid apprentice. But when the Duchy of Montefoglia is laid under military and magical siege, she unexpectedly must join with Thur Ochs, a young Swiss miner and foundryman, to tap their skills in both metalwork and necromancy to rescue her father's soul and combat an evil sorcerer.

Grover Gardner turns in his usual masterful performance in Lois McMaster Bujold's first fantasy novel. Set in Renaissance Italy, Fiametta is the lovestruck daughter of the Duke's metalsmith mage. She dreams as much of the Duke's guard captain as she does of becoming her father's apprentice.

Treachery upends her peaceful life during the betrothal dinner of the Duke's daughter. Fleeing for her life, Fiametta runs into the captain's younger brother and the two team up to recruit allies in their fight to save her father and his brother from a rival lord and his mysterious sorceror who seek to seize the Dukedom.

The Spirit Ring is a little unpolished compared to LMB's later works but still an entertaining tale.

I really enjoyed the setting and storytelling in The Spirit Ring. It’s fun, dark and interesting. If you like GGK’s alternate version of renaissance Italy you should try this

Great story read well

I recommend this book! It was a nice surprise because I was expecting something medieval with superficial story lines but I am happily surprised I picked the book to read/listen to. Both main characters have depth and are interesting (no blendness). The story lines is straightforward but gets turn around to a darker end when tragedy hits. Then Tur encounters Theomeda and together they try to save their lost relatives from a fate that threatens their souls and denies then rest in death.

Pretty interesting!

Sophisticated writing and a great story. A great light read and escape to a magical time.

Well written!

Lois McMaster Bujold pens an Alps-spanning flee-the-bad-guys adventure set in a world where Renaissance Europe is partly powered by church-controlled magic. The papacy and the author's analogues of the DeMedici family rule Italy.. and the magically-talented daughter of a sanctioned Wizard/Jeweler (named 'Fiametta Beneforte') teams up with a Swiss Guardsman's young brother ('Thur Ochs') to embark on a flight from a heretical rebel wizard threatening their respective communities.
The book is well-written and well-plotted but a bit maudlin to my tastes. McMaster-Bujold plays with budding romance a touch too much.

As to presentation: Grover Gardener is typically professional.. but didn't really stand out for me on this one. His pleasant tenor is characteristically comfortable, but he reads a touch too slowly on this product (set playback speed at 1.15X if you download the recording).
Don't get me wrong, mind you.. Gardner is a consistently praiseworthy narrator - it's just that Blackstone Audio Inc. could have gotten similar results from any voice-actor in their stable. I judge the reading "average" overall.

Altogether, 'The Spirit Ring' merits 7 stars out of 10. It was a reasonable distracting listen for free, but not worth your Credit if they ask for one. In that eventuality, keep browsing.

[Note: McMaster-Bujold has an annoying habit of switching from deadly serious epic action & death to humor-tinged (almost slapstick parody) farce - and back again. I was unsure if I was listening to something like 'The Wheel Of Time' or like 'The Princess Bride']
