After a slow start that entailed a very detailed description of the mechanics of choose-your-own adventure puzzle books, the story picked up pace and got more interesting. The attempt to write about the main character's mental anxieties quite dropped off halfway through the book, though that was fine as it was rather half-hearted. It was also bizarre that the adults didn't feel more urgency about rescuing the kidnapped girl from the beginning; she was an afterthought compared to finding the perpetrators.
