This is one of many dog training books I have picked up in anticipation of my new puppy and it is my favorite by far.

While most modern training books can teach positive, non-punative, dog training techniques. What seperates Victoria is her central focus on building a strong relationship first and leveraging that in training.

Victoria's central criticism of modern positive traning is that it treats the dog as thing to be programmed, rather than a being existing in a symbiotic relationship with humans. Unlike some other trainers she begins her analysis by always asking what the dog wants and what the trainer wants then working towards a compromise solution for the enrichment of both. She is always asking how to help dogs thrive in their environment rather than how to program specific behaviours. Thriving with humans requires that dogs learn our rules and ettiquette, but the learning process goes much smoother when a dog is happy and confident in its bond with its owner.
