Description

Eleven years before they were framed for the murder of a king, before even assuming the title of Riyria, Royce Melborn and Hadrian Blackwater were practically strangers. Unlikely associates, this cynical thief and idealist swordsman, were just learning how to work together as a team. In this standalone first installment of The Riyria Chronicles, Royce is determined to teach his naive partner a lesson about good deeds. Join Royce and Hadrian in this short story about one of their earliest adventures.

Please note: "The Viscount and the Witch" is Chapter 2 of The Rose and the Thorn, which is Book 2 in the series The Riyria Chronicles.

this is chapter 2 of the Rose and thorn.

don't appreciate being misled into thinking it's more content when it's just part of another title

Good story

Any additional comments?

I like that this story was not one that you needed to know the universe that the other stories were created in to enjoy it. I like the fact that it was a stand alone and you did not feel the need to have read the other books in the series to understand what was going on.

The Viscount and the Witch.

I liked how the author explained the order of the books before you listen. I enjoyed this story enough that I put the full length book in my wish list for when I'm ready for a new fantasy series.
Also try Jester, it also is a free sample to enjoy by this author. Narrator is great. Thanks audible for the freebie.

Be Careful Who You Steal From

I have read all three of the Riyria Revelations and they were all excellent fantasy. This short story is a part of the Riyria Chronicles which are the first three books in the Riyria adventures. Similar to Star Wars where the last three books/movies came out first. A little confusing.
Anyway, this is the second chapter of the second book in the Riyria Chronicles, "The Rose and the Thorn" and what a great teaser, it made me jump right back into Michael Sullivan's wonderful, epic fantasy series. I surely miss the characters and Tim Gerard Reynolds's fantastic narration, so I'm onto, "The Crown Tower".
If you like fantasy at all, or even if you don't, you will not be disappointed with any of these books. Highly recommend.

Good short story, but if you get book to don't buy this

This story ends up being chapter 2 in book 2. But if you have not read any of the series this is a good cheap introduction

Funny

In the intro, MJS admits that he is not that great at writing short stories, but says he put more effort into this one having good character development and a good rounded story. He was correct and it was funny on top of that. If you don't know if you want to read the Chronicles, then start with this short story. If you like it I know you will like the books.

Short but interesting

A short story, but interesting. Apparently this is taken from the second chapter of The Rose and the Thorn, the second book in the Ryiria Chronicles.

Hadrian and Royce are now working as a team – sort of. They are looking for lodging outside some town when they come across a ramshackle shack inhabited by what looks like a poor old lady. She claims to be unable to put them up but suggests that there is a man hiding in her barn, and if they can get rid of him, they can sleep in the barn.

As you might expect, neither the old woman nor the outlaw in the barn is what they at first seem, and Royce is quick to start in with the “I told you so’s.” But there is just time for one more twist, and Hadrian manages to pull it off.

Wonderful Intro to Riyria

This short is a wonderful and amusing intro to the characters and world of the Riyria Chronicles and Riyria Revelations. It quite nicely establishes the personalities of the main characters and shows the humor Sullivan works into his stories. If is not necessary for Sullivan's fans to purchase if they already own The Rose and The Thorn, as it is Chapter Two of that book (although it works wonderfully as a stand-alone short story).

Another Hilarious Adventure

Sullivan doesnt disappoint as the pair Hadrian and Royce go on yet another adventure! This short tale is especially centered in the development of the two, showing off their relationship and banter.

lessons learned and much remembered

Lessons learned are not always for the other person. Some humor within this read in adventure. In this short for the series 'The Riyria Chronicles' Sullivan makes the adventure fun and filling. I will be reading the rest of this series with anticipation for the first page.
