Description

An inn is a place to rest, a place to talk and share stories, a place to find adventure, or a starting ground for quests and legends.

It is in this world, at least. To Erin Solstice, an inn seems like a medieval relic from the past. But here she is, running from Goblins and trying to survive in a world full of monsters and magic. She’d be more excited about all of this if everything wasn’t trying to kill her. But an inn is what she’s found, and so that’s what she becomes; an innkeeper, who serves drinks to heroes and monsters.

Actually, mostly monsters. But it’s a living, right?

I love it, but...

I feel like it is important for any prospective readers to understand that this is not a 'novel' in the sense of most novels, that it has a beginning, middle and end and is plotted out to fit that mould. The Wandering Inn was originally (and remains to be) a Fantasy-LitRPG web novel that has very graciously been made into an audiobook, but that means that its formatting is quite different from other books. As of writing this review, it has over 25,000 pages and 6.7 million words- and while the audiobook and ebook versions have, I believe, been edited somewhat by the author since they were originally written, the story itself was never created in the same vein as a traditional novel or series.

Due to this formatting difference, you might feel as though the first volume of this novel has loose ends, focuses on characters that have little impact on the story, has little character growth or too little exposition; however, I feel that these issues mainly stem from the fact that this is a long-form style of writing. There is not too much thought put towards spelling things out for the readers through exposition as it is assumed that the world will unfold itself as you progress through the story, much like if you were to play a game of Dungeons and Dragons. The characters' growth and development will take longer as we don't skip through time with them to major events but rather experience the minutiae of their everyday lives, which means that their development will occur over a longer period of time.

The author has been writing this story since 2016, and there are currently 7 Volumes (so 7 approx 40-60+ hour-long audiobooks hopefully!) written with the 8th underway- if you are looking for immediate satisfaction and answers to the world and the characters in this first volume then this might not be the audiobook for you (I mean, it's 43 hours long to start.) But if you are looking for something with incredibly detailed world-building, engaging and sometimes ridiculous characters, and unique mysteries that you are willing to wait a long time to see unravelled, then this is the story for you. If you like D&D, SAO, or Fantasy-LitRPG's, I highly recommend giving this a shot. If you like strong female characters that are relatable and aren't just a male character in a female body, this could be the story for you; alternately if you like male characters that have strength in a myriad of ways, this has those as well. If you like the typical hero's journey being turned on its head, reluctant heroes, dragons, humanoid species of creatures that are not humans, and monsters- The Wandering Inn has you covered.

There is magic and mundane, there are battles and slice-of-life moments, there are really smart characters and, admittedly, really dumb characters. I implore you to give this story a chance if any of the things listed above interest you because this series has become one of my favourite pieces of fantasy literature and I think that as many people as possible should have the chance to experience it.

All that being said, I love the narrator that was chosen for the audiobook. Considering there are a LOT of unique characters and different races of humanoids to characterize, her approach has really blown me away, especially with the Antinium characters. I honestly don't think anyone else could have done a better job.

Finally, give Erin and Ryoka a chance. They can be really frustrating sometimes, but their growth does happen- Ryoka specifically I find has a lot of growth in Volume 2. The fact that the novel still has a large following after nearly FIVE YEARS should- in my opinion- be a solid recommendation in and of itself.

Great Story

I didn't know what to expect when I bought the book but I was pleasantly surprised. Unlike many of the other reviewers I was completely unaware of the webseries. Audible recommended this book to me and I love fantasy/sci-fi and who wouldn't want a book that's over 43 hours long so I figured why not I'll give it a try? I am so glad I did.
The Wandering Inn by Pirate Aba is about a girl named Erin who randomly finds herself transported to a fantasy realm. One minute she is in the real world and the next she is being chased by Goblins, hiding out in a run down inn and eating blue fruit. The thing Erin's knows she's an innkeeper and leveling up despite the fact that she has no idea what is going on.

This book is so addicting. Once you start you really don't want to stop. I don't know what it is about it that's so much fun but it just is.

Andrea Parsneau does an amazing job with the voices! I particularly liked Relc and Klbkch. Like all good narrators Andrea's narration immerses you into the story and makes it feel more real. After finishing this audio book I am positive if I were to read it in written form I would hear Andrea's voice in my head (I'm already hearing it just thinking about the book) and I love that.

Interesting but frustrating

while the story is interesting to a point, it's never really progresses at its core. there is a good amount of character development, but most of that time is wasted since many of those characters are no longer relevant by book's end. both of the main characters are interesting, but conveniently forgetful of important bits of information and rather inconsistent. many of their decisions and moments of stupidity are obvious plot devices or simply annoying. the overall concept is interesting, but the execution suggests future episodes of pointless character development and needless frustration.

it was a struggle

I had High Hopes considering, the reviews were all really good for this book and I'm usually a big fantasy genre buff. This book was just not for me. I felt it was a Elementary and the narration was extremely annoying! Bordering on super corny.

Ugh.. Er... No thanks

So to start with a positive. The narrator is incredibly talented and dedicated. She was amazing. I would have given her a 5 but she was so committed that she goes so hard into some of the accents that I think there's a solid 5 hours of long s sounds, which is quite taxing at times.

Okay, so why one star for the story? Well there is no story. There is no progressive plot in any way shape or form.

The writing is pretty bad. To the point where characters completely forget what they were joust told or just told one another and then ignore it for the next 8 hours of book before they are told again as if It were for the first time.

The characters are all generally unlikable. They get angry at people for little or no reason.

I usually like these kinds of books due to world building, but there's no explanation in the first 30 hours of the book.

I don't know why I listened for that long. I was trying so hard to like this book, and I hope you do like it. But I found it frustrating and exhausting.

What fun!

This is such a great story and the narrator fits the bill. I hope Audible does the rest of the series.

Ended up going up and down emotionally through the book. Wasn’t expecting it, all the same I really enjoyed the book. Ended up becoming one of my favourites. Really hoping the next one comes out soon.

Broken plot and weak main characters

So first off I just want to say despite not really enjoying this book from the beginning I did listen to the entire book.

The reason for me disliking the book truly was the fact that the mc are whiny and frankly it wants to be a slice of life book but it is not even true to the genre. The emotional monologs the author feels the need to add every 4 hours of book tone gets so dry to the point where after the first quarter of the book I can no longer even care about them.

As other reviewers have pointed out the grammer and constant hashing of the different ways things have happened makes this book about 4 times longer than needed.

There are great moments in the book but truly these are mostly made good by the narrator not the story. The narrator has an amazing range of voices that truly shine in this book.

Frankly the book just falls way too short and I feel that many of these 5 stars have been paid for...

A truly great book!

This was the story that convinced me to open a patron account! It’s a huge, beautiful, unique world. The characters and side characters feel real and fleshed out. There are classes and hidden abilities. The writing is clear and polished. The voice actor chosen is excellent! Don’t sleep on this title

just boring

the performance of this book is great but damm do this book is boring it's the type of books either you love it or you hate it, I hate it, the protagonist is just too retarded for me. I hear that you can read it for free on the website of the author, people should try it there before buying it here. if you like it there you will love it here the performance was really great.

Endless whining and painfully slow

I managed to listen 7h of this book, hoping for it to grip me but no. Main lead keeps whining like entitled teen and cannot do anything at all without long monologues how unfair everything is. I see all the reviews saying that it gets good but 7 hours and listening feels like homework that you are forced to slog through so i simply cannot continue anymore.

amazing writing but....

the two characters continuously have emotional breakdowns but no real breakthrough. they appear to have emotional breakthroughs and then they do the exact same thing over and over again I don't understand the writing style from that standpoint. the writer makes you think that they're going to overcome creates a amazing moment and then they don't and this continues to happen throughout the whole book, these are two amazingly strong women that the author continues to make them look weak and vulnerable all the time with random outbursts of anger.

Worth it in the end!

The first half of the book was great and annoying off and on, but the author improves steadily making the second half 5 stars. I just finished reading volume 2 on her website and it’s 6 stars with no annoyances! It was so worth getting this far and there is a ton of story already written to keep going.

The characters are so unique and believable. It has LOL comedy, drama, battle, politics, tragedy to some extent, small every day cute stories, and a complex world.

The narrator did a fantastic job as usual!

Only bought because of size and looked ok. Boy was I wrong

Wow, so after the long title I’m not sure what else to say. I got this just because of the size and it looked ok. I am so glad I did. This book rocks.

It is an excellent listen. This is one of the few five star books I have ever really heard. A true 5 star is the best of the best. And the story here is.

interesting take on isekai adventure books

It seems like ever since SAO came out, isekai style books, Manga, and anime have been everywhere. Don't get me wrong, I love a "transported to another world" genre, but it starts to get stale after a while.

Not this book though. This follows a girl who is, in all presented aspects, normal. She's not an OP SUPER GOD like the usual isekai fair. She's a lost girl who found an inn, and whoops, she's now an innkeeper in a world of animal-people and magic. I won't go into more detail because I want you to follow her story yourself, it's worth the trip. The characters have depth, emotion, growth, the world is well structured and makes sense, and the progression of the story is never halting, nor does it drag on.
Oh, and there's chess. I'm a sucker for chess. Pirate Aba, if you ever read this and want to play, give me a holler, cus it sounds like you'd be a fun opponent.

I was itching to listen to more and more of this book, and when it ended (about 1 minute ago from the time of writing this) I was actually pretty upset it was over. 43 hours over the course of about a week, and I want more, more, MORE. In fact, as soon as this review is done, I'm off to start reading Volume 2, so I'm now in a hurry.

Andrea Parsenau is, as usual, a wonderful narrator. She is among the small list of people who's narrations I will listen to, even if the book they're narrating seems strange, simply because their work is that good.

Give this book a listen, even if you're tired of isekai adventures. I promise you won't regret it.

Beyond brilliant, so glad I decided on this one!

Never thought I'd make a review on an E-book, but I just HAVE to give back a little of what this book has given to me, it feels like the price I paid for it was not enough.

I can see that the majority of bad reviews bash the main character, and while the story is still GREAT early on, I can see why they might dislike Erin for the very first few chapters.

But this story just picks up and quickly turns from great to amazing, Erin too, I use E-books as listening material while I draw, and this book made me impatient to get to my daily drawing just so I can keep listening to it,
The world is alive and filled with loveable characters and concepts, parts to make you laugh, parts to make you cry, parts to make you genuinely horrified, an incredible world you quickly become a part of!

The narrator is everything a narrator could and should be, she portrays the voices of different characters so well that you can completely forget you're listening to an e-book narrator rather than a conversation between two characters - until more Volumes come out I might just have to pick my next E-book according to what else she narrated.

If I have any complaints it all, it would just be that there's only one Volume on Audible at the date of this review, which is torture, as I can see it was only rather recently released, but if all Volumes were available as E-books, there's not a single doubt in my mind I would listen to all of them in succession!

This.. this is an immortal start.

I have read all my life. loved books, loved characters. felt heartbreak, and been awed by fantastic worlds. I've cheered hundreds of protagonists, hated more than thousands of villains.

The Wayward Inn is right at the forefront. I sit here, feeling. living. churning with so many emotions I can't JUST give a simple review.
I'll preface with the cons though:
some plotholes, mostly minor.
Erin is a little aloof.
Rioka takes getting used to.
depending how you feel about pacing can be a slow burn.
From what I've come to find out about This story though is it's the weakest of the volumes.
Calling this the weakest? I can barely fathom how much better the rest of the series is then.

Every character is a person. the world is realized. Not a single moment is filler and everything matters. Things seem to come out of nowhere only to make sense when you think about it. Moments happen that even if you foresee then you hold your breath for HOURS wondering. This is not a child's book. it's not vulgur or explicit. It is hard though. it's as hard as real life.

Good. Erin and Rioka.. and even the ancillary characters go through LIFE. life in a harsh world. Even the secondary and tertiary characters matter. every thread has points of importance and connect in the massive web that many high fantasy authors can't even make well. Aba is beyond most in their class. something special is in this story. and it's spoke to me. I LIVED and BREATHED this book. I hated this book,
and I loved it because it made me hate it.
I love this book. I truly love it.
And I wish I had the energy to even TOUCH upon Andrea's amazing performance. it's a masterclass. But I'm just wiped. I'm exhausted in the best way possible because I experianced my own immortal moment. one that lasted 43 hours that to me will never fade away even when I'm old and grey. Try this book. return it if you don't like it.. But try this book.

Darker Expression of Despair than I normally enjoy.

I wanted a awesomely fulfilling adventure quest. And so my expectations perhaps got in the way of my enjoying this story more. That said overall, I found this writing expressive of mostly dark feelings of the characters combined with long dialogue of a “beat a dead horse” nature at times. The performance was good and the well done accents the most enjoyable aspect of this book for me. I didn’t find myself wandering what was in store for our characters at the end. Just wanting to pet some puppies.
You will enjoy this if you love the dark side of adventure type tales. I need mine a bit less expressive of despair.

cant stand the main characters

Great Narration , that I about it, the basis of the story is childish, the 2 main characters are horrid people, rude ungrateful Brats, one thinks she is better than everyone and everything, the other, shes a hot mess and all over the place, I can't say it's a good thing when you keep hoping the main ones in the story will hurry up and get eaten. I made it to chapter 43, can't even make it to see if the minator kicks her butt, although it would be the best part of the book, maybe she would end up as a humble pie class

Main character too stupid to live

WOW.... We tried to listen to this on a long car trip and about 5 hours in, all we wanted was for the main character to die.
The narrator is extremely talented, and does a fantastic array of voices, but the whining way she portrays the main character is like nails on a chalkboard.
No main protagonist should generate the kind of visceral desire for her death like this one does.

Even in fantasy novels, there has to be some sort of foundation in reality. In reality, this character would starve in a grocery store trying to figure out how to open a loaf of bread.

Props to the narrator for every voice she does EXCEPT the main character.
