Histoire
The first book in a brand-new series, The Last Kingdom is set in England during the reign of King Alfred. Uhtred is an English boy, born into the aristocracy of ninth-century Northumbria. Orphaned at 10, he is captured and adopted by a Dane and taught the Viking ways. Yet Uhtred's fate is indissolubly bound up with Alfred, King of Wessex, who rules over the only English kingdom to survive the Danish assault. The struggle between the English and the Danes and the strife between christianity and paganism is the background to Uhtred's growing up.

The Last Kingdom is one of the most successful historical fiction series of our time, telling the epic story of the birth of England, and introducing one of the greatest ever fictional heroes: the iconic Uhtred of Bebbanburg. Saxon-born, Norse-raised, warrior and rebel. The final Last Kingdom book was published in 2020, but for the author the story felt unfinished: there were some Uhtred tales he still wanted to tell, and over the course of writing the books he'd become fascinated by some elements of the Anglo-Saxon world that it wasn't possible to fully explore in the novels.

An extraordinary and dramatic depiction of the legendary battle of Agincourt from the number one historical novelist Agincourt, fought on October 25th 1415, St Crispin's Day, is one of England’s best-known battles, in part through the brilliant depiction of it in Shakespeare's Henry V, in part because it was a brilliant and unexpected English victory and in part because it was the first battle won by the use of the longbow - a weapon developed by the English which enabled them to dominate the European battlefields....

Twenty-eight florins a month is a huge price to pay for a man to stand between you and the Wild. Twenty-eight florins a month is nowhere near enough when a wyvern's jaws snap shut on your helmet in the hot stink of battle, and the beast starts to rip the head from your shoulders. But if standing and fighting is hard, leading a company of men - or worse, a company of mercenaries - against the smart, deadly creatures of the Wild is even harder. It takes all the advantages of birth, training, and the luck of the devil to do it.

Incredible narration
This is the best narration I have ever heard in an audiobook! Truly brings the story alive and with just the right intonations and spirit. I’ll be looking for other books narrated by Johnathon Keeble!

Pretty brutal depiction of post roman Britain.
Grew on me after getting through initial strangeness but once the world is built, immensely enjoyable and kept me busy on Wikipedia. Apart from long winded exposition, very interesting and a brutal affair.

Excellent!
Bernard Cornwell is one of my all-time favourite historical fiction authors, and Jonathan Keeble (who also reads the first four books of The Last Kingdom series) interprets this story superbly, capturing the gruffness, brutality and passion of post-Roman Britain. I will definitely listen to this again in the future, and anything by Cornwell with Keeble reading is top of my post for future listens!

Wasn't as focused on warfare strategy like The Last Kingdom series. More political but I still enjoyed it. I like the down to earth take on the Arthurian Legend.

Good 1st book. I will continue the Series
The writing was top notch. Very fluid and eloquent at times. The character work was decent but not deep enough for me to be invested in a lot of the side characters. The story was intriguing and definitely has left me wanting to come back for about two. The narration was spectacular. Top-notch

A Master Piece
Cornwell is the best writer ever. I had read this trilogy before a decade ago. Since then I became a fan. Have read more than 25 books written by BC and the more I read other writers, the more I miss his books. If you have never read any of Cornwell’s books, this one is perfect start.

Captivating Arthurian Audiobook that Shines with Emotive Narration and Abundant References!
Title: Audiobook Review: Winter King by Bernard Cornwell
I recently listened to the audiobook version of Winter King by Bernard Cornwell, and I must say, it was the best performance I have ever heard. The narrator did an exceptional job of bringing the text to life with emotions, including laughter and character voices that added depth to the story.
One aspect that stood out to me was how the author incorporated the Arthurian mythos into the story. It felt like reading a well-written fanfic, as the author clearly had a deep understanding and imagination for living in that world. The relationships between the characters and their connections to Arthurian legends, real historical figures, and other British origins were evident and made for an intriguing read.
Another highlight of the book was the sheer amount of references and easter eggs scattered throughout the story. I found myself constantly searching for familiar names and discovering how they were related to the Arthurian legends or other historical contexts. It was a delightful treasure hunt that added depth to the storytelling.
One aspect that could have been improved upon was the use of "deus ex machina" resources, which almost ruined a great moment for me. However, this was a minor issue in an otherwise captivating story.
I also appreciated the exploration of the relationships between different religions and cultures in the book. The interactions between the Saxons, Irish, and other groups provided a fascinating perspective on the historical context of the Arthurian era.
Overall, Winter King is definitely worth listening to, even if you have read other Arthurian books before. The narrator's performance is outstanding, and the unique take on the Arthurian mythos, coupled with the abundance of references and easter eggs, make it an engaging and enjoyable listen. I highly recommend it to fans of historical fiction, Arthurian legends, and those who enjoy a fresh take on familiar stories.

A great take on an old story. Made you do some research on pre-Roman Briton. Takes the fictional literary yarn of Author much more human.

Slow and boring
Story was so slow, i almost stopped in many occasions. The accents were poor and really annoying. I had high hopes as I love the sharpe series by Bernard Cornwall, but I will not be getting the second in the series.
