 Fans of the Shannara epic will revel as the forces of good battle an evil book, the Ildatch, which sends the Mord Wraiths to destroy mankind. To overcome this dark force, the Druid Allanon needs Brin Ohmsford, for she holds the power of the wishsong, a magic invoked by singing that can make plants bloom instantly or turn trees from green to autumn gold.

As Brin reluctantly joins Allanon on his dangerous journey, a prophecy foretells an evil plan to trap the unsuspecting Brin into a fate more horrible than death. But she has the help of her brother, Jair, and the protection of Rone Leah, who takes his job very seriously, as the comic rustics, Weapons Master Garet Jax and Slanter the gnome, leaven the fantasy.

Really like Terry Brook's writing. The third book in the series is getting a bit repetitive with the story, but a good one none the less!

Finished strong

I kinda wish that Terry Brooks had decided to write something other than a quest to fight evil headed by seven-foot-tall Druid Allanon and a half-elven resident of the Shady Vale. Fortunately, although the book is pretty clearly aimed at the author's established young adult audience - 'Wishsong of Shannara' is notably sophomoric - it's thoroughly rollercoaster-ride fun. Brooks writes capably, plots his tale nicely, and choreographs encounters vividly. Just don't expect anything new, and you'll be entertained.

As to presentation: Reader Scott Brick delivers his customary excellent narration performance in terms of diction, pacing, voice-acting, and tone. Unfortunately, the audiobook is also plagued by Brick's characteristic borderline arrogant timbre/cadence. Listen at 1.15X for the most natural-sounding experience.

Altogether, this 'Shannara' series entry is an enjoyable - if somewhat formulaic - Terry Brooks story. It merits 6.5 stars out of 10. Spend the Credit.
