Health and wellness campaigns preach avoidance of unhealthy foods, sedentary lifestyles, tobacco, drugs, and alcohol, but rarely preach avoidance of unhealthy, difficult, or toxic people. Yet the health benefits of removing toxic people from your life may have far greater benefits to both physical and psychological health. We need to learn to be better gatekeepers for our minds, bodies, and souls. Narcissism, entitlement, and incivility have become the new world order, and we are all in trouble. They are not only normalized but also increasingly incentivized.

Histoire
The last 10 years has seen an explosion of interest in the concept of narcissism, both in clinical psychology and popular culture. How can we, as individuals, foster, and maintain our own, healthy sense-of-self in challenging relationships with a narcissist family member, friend, spouse, or colleague? How do we identify the narcissist individual in our relationships, take safe steps toward protecting ourselves, and move past the dynamics that keep us stuck and hurting?

In Traumatic Narcissism, Daniel Shaw presents a way of understanding the traumatic impact of narcissism as it is engendered developmentally and as it is enacted relationally. Focusing on the dynamics of narcissism in interpersonal relations, Shaw describes the relational system of what he terms the "traumatizing narcissist" as a system of subjugation - the objectification of one person in a relationship as the means of enforcing the dominance of the subjectivity of the other.

Description
Every day, headlines are filled with examples of narcissistic individuals in positions of power who are nothing more than impostors plundering and wrecking havoc on the lives of others. From the financial barons of Wall Street to our elected officials, we are confronted daily with narcissists and the self-serving systems that enable them. Helping people reclaim their lives from this sinister exploitative force is the mission behind Eleanor Payson's The Wizard of Oz and Other Narcissists: Coping with the One-Way Relationship in Work, Love, and Family.
Using simple metaphors from the American classic, The Wizard of Oz, Payson illustrates how Dorothy's journey captures all the seductive illusions and challenges that occur when we encounter the narcissist. Empowering the listener with the ABCs of unhealthy narcissism and the unique problems that occur when a person becomes involved with the narcissist, Payson gives step-by-step practical tools to identify, protect, and heal from these destructive relationships, which are largely un-addressed in the psychology and self-help literature.
This ground-breaking book offers hope and help to those who have been drawn into these devastating relationships. She includes illuminating case studies that identify the problems that occur in the different types of relationships, from co-workers, to friends, to parents, to lovers. Listeners employing these insights and skills will find new abilities to identify and protect against the narcissist's manipulations and take back control of their lives.

Very informative.
Good introduction to narcissism and it’s behaviours. I liked how the author pointed out that many narcissistic actions are very common but when these traits are all when combined in 1 person it’s a disorder.

Hmmm …
Either one or fours stars.
Lots of words. Not so much concrete assistance. One star for that.
Maybe it hit to close to home.
“See a counsellor. Get into the twelve step program.”
Pretty much sums it up.
I will continue my search.
