À propos de cet audio

A new collection of hilarious, intergenerational anecdotes full of absurd detail about everyday experiences of racism from the New York Times bestselling authors of You’ll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey, comedian Amber Ruffin and her sister Lacey.

Families may not always see eye to eye; we get on each other’s nerves, have different perspectives and lives—especially when we consider how we've grown up in different generations. But for the Ruffin family and many others, there has been one constant that connects them: racism hasn’t gone anywhere.

From her raucous musical numbers to turning upsetting news into laughs as the host of The Amber Ruffin Show or in her Late Night with Seth Meyers segments, Amber is no stranger to finding the funny wherever she looks. With equal parts heart and humor, she and her sister Lacey Lamar shared some of the eye-opening and outrageous experiences Lacey had faced in Nebraska in their first book. Now, the dynamic duo makes it clear—Lacey isn’t the only one in the family with ridiculous encounters to share! Amber and Lacey have many more uproarious stories, both from their own lives and the entire Ruffin family.

Recounting the wildest tales of racism from their parents, their siblings, and Amber’s nieces and nephews, this intergenerational look at ludicrous (but all too believable) everyday racism as experienced across age, gender, and appearance will have you gasping with shock and laughter in turn. Validating for anyone who has first-hand experience, and revealing for anyone who doesn’t, Amber and Lacey’s next book helps us all find the absurdity in the pervasive frustrations of racism. Illuminating and packed with love and laughter, this is a must-read for just about everyone.

Ce que les critiques en disent

"Thank you again to the Ruffin sisters for stuffing ten pounds of truth in a (funny!) five pound bag."—Tina Fey
"A perfect follow-up to the authors’ You’ll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey . . . The banter between the sisters is consistently funny, but the underlying social commentary remains incisive . . . An excellent look at lived experiences of Black Americans that should be required reading for all Americans."—Kirkus, Starred Review

This one is just as good as the first one and they do a phenomenal job matching the tone and pace.

Amber Ruffin and Lacey Lamar are phenomenal. Period. End of sentence!
This book had me both laughing out loud and wiping away tears of sadness and disbelief. They took a most heartbreaking subject matter of racism and had me laughing. These ladies, and their families, have me in awe. Thank you Amber and Lacey! I hope you have many more books in your future but I deeply hope that you have no new stories to fill them with. (Listen to this book and you will understand that sentence.)
Also, the Audible version of this book is amazing just for the songs alone!
Highly -- no -- highestly (yes, I invented that word because it is deserved here) recommend this listen!

There are not enough stars for these ladies!

I enjoyed their first book so I had high hopes for this and they didn’t disappoint. Thank you for sharing and giving more insight to your lived experiences.

Thank you

Once again, Amber and Lacey shine a light on the very real racism experienced by all members of their family and do so with charm, songs and humour without diminishing the incredulity, frustration, anger, or fear that circulate through the stories. And this time, a bonus pdf of cute pictures!!!

As delightful and disturbing as the 1st

I absolutely loved this.

It's witty and extremely well written (and narrated), inviting you to laugh along at the sheer audacity, ignorance, and racism of some people while still highlighting that, even though you can laugh at those aspects, they're still pristine examples of what is clearly inappropriate, rude, racist, bigotry that should not be seen as acceptable in society but clearly, as these stories show, still are considere such by swathes of people.

Even when most of these stories are told as funny and unbelievable, you never forget that they are the same story outlines that many Black people and other minorities live through again, and again, and again. The hardest part, besides the human empathy itself for the people whose stories are being told, is knowing that the people who most need to learn how bad it is to be a racist POS are the exact people who aren't likely to pick this up willingly.

Now obviously I can't speak to how the book reads/lands from the perspective of a Black person, but I can propose that even the most well-meaning ally can still learn from the stories in this book and work towards "doing better next time."

A must-read for any ally
