I loved that water is an essential character in this triangle of life journeys spanning hundreds of years. History and culture are met with a beautiful simplicity. The narrators create an immense sense of peace even in the dark folds of the story telling. I'm going to listen to it again. I really liked the mixing of ancient history and culture with modern.

This is a good story. The plot is interesting but there are few surprises along the narrative. It is well woven together but is unfortunately quite predictable.

This is a beautiful book that interweaves the stories of three characters in different centuries whose lives are connected by water in several ways. Each lives near or on a river: the Thames or the Tigris. And those rivers are central in their lives and those of the communities they inhabit. A mid-19th century boy rises from desperate poverty to achieve great learning and archeological discoveries in the former Mesopotamia. A nine-year-old Yazidi girl living in northern Turkey in 2014, whose grandmother teaches her their culture's spiritual and historical background, lives through horrific events in at the hands of ISIS. And a London woman, orphaned as a child in Turkey, is raised by an uncle who emigrated to Britain, and as an adult, studies water as a scientist. Their stories and lives cross in many ways. There is hardship, suffering, even terror. But I'm glad to have learned of these historical and contemporary events, many of which actually happened, in the context of an extended arc of time and the complexity of several cultures. Also, the narration in the Audible version is outstanding, making it a pleasure to listen to.

Great book, beautifully written, too many plots

I really like the book, the story is very powerfully and interesting, and makes you think about a single drop of water that constantly move throughout the space and time, and about the pollution in today’s environment. However, I find that the story line in this book was very often interrupted over and over again with the way how the book was presented by moving back and forth from one story and time to another.

I love Shafak's writing! Truly one of the best writers in the 21st century. So much research! Such vivid story telling!

Amazing and captivating story

This novel begins and ends with water. a love story about how it ties us together through space, time and geography.
Shafat gives us a work about love for people and places. and how those feelings can lead to unexpected and tragic events. it is a 4 pronged story beginning in ancient Mesopotamia, London and the Thames, Iraq and the Tigris, and back again to the Thames.

I loved the first half of this book, but it lost its appeal as it became obvious that two of the three characters were going to have a grim end. Also the constantly shifting of story lines from one character to another made the story difficult to follow.
The historical information was interesting, but I didn’t really connect with the characters and felt weighed down by their unhappy circumstances which often stretched out longer than necessary.

Too many story lines bogged it down

Shafak tried hard to make it work. It did not work. Too much facts, history make the story fake and forced. Using water was forced too. It doesn’t sit well with the flow. Trying to speak for Yazidies is great but idolizing a religion as primitive as the others is not the way out of it. Disappointed!

The weakest of Elif’s work so far.
