Description

The Great War is over, but one young widow discovers the real intrigue has only just begun.

England, 1919. Verity Kent's grief over the loss of her husband pierces anew when she receives a cryptic letter suggesting her beloved Sidney may have committed treason before his untimely death. Determined to dull her pain with revelry, Verity's first impulse is to dismiss the derogatory claim. But the mystery sender knows too much - including the fact that during the war Verity worked for the Secret Service, something not even Sidney knew.

Lured to Umbersea Island to attend the engagement party of one of Sidney's fellow officers, Verity mingles among the men her husband once fought beside and discovers dark secrets - along with a murder clearly meant to conceal them. Relying on little more than a coded letter, the help of a dashing stranger, and her own sharp instincts, Verity is forced down a path she never imagined and comes face-to-face with the shattering possibility that her husband may not have been the man she thought he was. It's a truth that could set her free - or draw her ever deeper into his deception.

Story is enjoyable but narrator not so much

Enjoyed the story and would listen to more in the series with a different narrator, but will probably just read the books as this narrator is not very good. Frequently uses the same inflections for every sentence, ignores obvious punctation making it difficult to follow the narration, and just generally sounds uninterested in what she is reading. I finished this book as I really like this author and her books but considered quitting part way through as the narrator was annoying me.

Good story, poor reader<br />

The "narrator" merely reads the book with little change of tone, frequently emphasing the wrong words and making no distinction between thoughts and speech. This makes it often confusing for the listener. I will purchase the next book in series as an ebook.

Interesting Post WWI mystery

I enjoy Anna Lee Huber’s writing (very much liked her previous series). This is new, presumably the beginning of a new series?

Plot is quite well-woven, with many characters that she distinguishes well so the listener can keep up. The story features a young war widow, Verity Kent, who receives an odd invitation to attend an engagement party on Umbersea Island. Officers from her deceased husband’s unit are gathering, along with some single young women, at one person’s home there. She (rightly) feels uncomfortable as mysterious things and murder start to occur as soon as she arrives.

Story is good, characters interesting, mystery good—I didn’t figure out till very end. If only Ms. Huber would find a different narrator. I would have given the entire thing more stars with someone else reading it.

Narrator without inflection...

I gave this 2 stars because I couldn't finish. It was impossible to ignore the narrator's lack of inflection and odd pauses. Put those two things together and I couldn't even concentrate on the storyline. I have listened to all of Ms. Huber's books but for some reason this time Ms. Wilde was worse than usual. I plan to get the kindle version and read it for myself so I don't miss this story altogether. Have to say, worst narration I've encountered in a long time!!!

Narrator made impossible to finish

Like other reviewers, I found the Narrator impossible to listen to....flat and without a hint of character. Disappointed because the story seems to be one that I would enjoy.

What a gal Verity Kent Is!

The plot certainly has some twists! Love this wealthy “Modern” woman. Ah has quite a past! Fun to listen to as the Characters develop. Quite an end to a post WWI house party!

Narrator!

This story is probably good, but I could not finish it, even at 1.5 speed. The intonation and rhythm of the narrator NEVER changes. This is the example of the importance of "acting" the books, not just reading.

Terrible Narration

The narrator's reading style is very distracting with pauses in the wrong place and very little difference between the character's voices. Hard to follow the story because of it. Will read the other books rather than listen.

Roll over Agatha, your crown is in jeopardy!

Picture this: the WWI peace treaty is about to be signed, soldiers have flooded home to England's shores and you, a female British Secret Service ‎agent, have been released back to your upper-class life of leisure. The drinking and dancing leave a sour taste in your mouth though, because your young husband was killed in the trenches, and the emotional knife wound in your breast still aches with his loss.

A gilded invitation to attend a weekend engagement fest with your husband's fellow officers at first doesn't sound appealing. But when a secretive letter threatens to reveal your departed sweetheart as a traitor unless you attend, you decide to drive his Pierce Arrow down to the pier where the party yacht awaits.

Now you find yourself on an isolated island, inside a dark, rain soaked castle, trying to enjoy yourself while you figure out who sent that annoying missive. ‎It could even be a harmless prank. But then one dead body shows up, and soon, another. Why have the victims been killed? Could your husband have been a traitor after all? Will you be the next prey? And, in spite of your growing attraction to him, could the handsome Lord Ryde be the mastermind behind it all?

In the spirit of the old grande dames of Mystery, Hubert delivers a rich and intriguing whodunit‎, with many familiar elements, but a style all her own. I particularly enjoyed the wind-whipped atmosphere of the castle, the deceitful twists, and the historical tidbits related to the war. My favorite though, was imagining, for a time, that I was an aristocratic spy, trying to track down a killer and clear my husband's good name.

I look forward to more in this series.

I've really enjoyed other works by Anna Lee Huber and am excited she seems to be starting a new series. I'll definitely continue to follow this character and hope more books come out soon.

Another Hit From Anna Lee Huber!

Huber introduces us to another great heroine with as compelling a background and personality as Lady Darby.
