Unfortunately, Pirog takes the sardonic humor and razor wit in Prescott's inner dialogue to an extreme. By about ¼ of the way into Book Two of the four in this collection, it got very old.. Thomas Prescott is entertainingly witty (the "sick burns" are hilarious), but - when all is said and done - not centered in reality. The mysteries are great, but it got harder and harder to cheer for this incongruous shockingly nonserious sleuth. I wish Pirog had been able to tone the tongue-in-cheek down just a little bit.
More fortuitously, Blackstone Audio Inc almost save the books with brilliant reader casting: Johnny Heller reads a bit too quickly (slowing playback speed to 0.90X yielded the optimal experience) - and some of his accents are legitimately cringeworthy - but he delivers spot-on diction, cadence, and timbre.. and the *perfect* deadpan tone for the text. This audiobook features some of the best-suited narration that I have heard in a long time.
With the exception of Book Three ('The Afrikaans' is a woefully bad attempt at an International Terrorism Technothriller), the stories in this series of books would be more than serviceable if the incessantly-comedic tone was better balanced.
As it stands, I rate the collection 5 stars out of 10. I recommend that listeners take breaks between entries - avoid listening to all four books in a row unless you're comfortable with losing "professional respect" for the main character.
NOTE: The fact that I got the audiobook as a 'Plus' selection doubtless improves my impression of the compendium, too (it's likely not even as good as I imply - but it's a reasonable investment of time if you can get it for free)..
Regardless, paying a Credit for this distinctly "average" recording would be hard to defend.
[FYI: If you cut off your own ears with a machete, you can still hear.. it doesn't protect you from "sonic attacks"
..and virtually any non-American citizen on the planet can tell you that 55 km/hr on a Highway is comically slow - not frighteningly breakneck no matter *how* rough the going]
Unrelenting Sarcasm.. *sigh*
