A complete crime fiction box set! Homicide detective Thomas Prescott may be retired—but a serial killer, a high-profile murder, an ill-fated cruise, and a chilling small-town crime add more than enough excitement to his hard-earned rest.

Best series I’ve had the pleasure of listening to in some time.
Everything a good story needs to take you into the creation.
Johnny’s narration brings the characters to life.

Nick has great style!

I really enjoyed the protagonist’s sense of humour and the story telling. Worth it to listen to all 4 books.

Entertaining

The narrator’s voice grated my nerves. I read the reviews before starting book 1, and because they were so good, I kept listening in hopes that the story would capture me. It didn’t. I made it to chapter 15 and I can’t tell you what the story was about. I know he is a highly sought after narrator, but to me it sounded cartoonish and all characters sounded the same. Having said that, given the great reviews on the series itself, I might try to read the books instead.

Couldn’t finish book 1

I had to concentrate to get into the first book, but I stuck with it and was hooked. Highly recommend! I was disappointed when the series ended.

A fantastic series!

Thomas is misogynistic and creepy, his toxic masculinity is on full display all the time

Yuck

I enjoyed the first book in the series, but I was more engaged with each consecutive novel. ‘Show Me’ was fantastic!

Gets better with each book

Great Books

When I started listening, I actually stopped and tried to find a different book. I found the protagonist to be a womanizer, and his personality turned me off. But when I couldn’t find a suitable replacement in a hurry, I kept listening. Pretty soon I was hooked. By the end of the book Prescott had growing on me, and by the fourth book, I had grown quite fond of the womanizing asshole.

This series grew on me.

Colorado-native Author Nick Pirog pens respectable action-heavy Crime Thrillers - paced nicely, populated with interesting characters, made vivid with occasionally gory descriptions, and full of plausible twists & turns. His protagonist - young but "retired" (independently wealthy) FBI-associated detective 'Thomas Prescott' - is intuitive, ethical, and dedicated to solving crime.. but jaded, perpetually contrarian, and brilliantly sarcastic. He's a fascinating character.

Unfortunately, Pirog takes the sardonic humor and razor wit in Prescott's inner dialogue to an extreme. By about ¼ of the way into Book Two of the four in this collection, it got very old.. Thomas Prescott is entertainingly witty (the "sick burns" are hilarious), but - when all is said and done - not centered in reality. The mysteries are great, but it got harder and harder to cheer for this incongruous shockingly nonserious sleuth. I wish Pirog had been able to tone the tongue-in-cheek down just a little bit.

More fortuitously, Blackstone Audio Inc almost save the books with brilliant reader casting: Johnny Heller reads a bit too quickly (slowing playback speed to 0.90X yielded the optimal experience) - and some of his accents are legitimately cringeworthy - but he delivers spot-on diction, cadence, and timbre.. and the *perfect* deadpan tone for the text. This audiobook features some of the best-suited narration that I have heard in a long time.

With the exception of Book Three ('The Afrikaans' is a woefully bad attempt at an International Terrorism Technothriller), the stories in this series of books would be more than serviceable if the incessantly-comedic tone was better balanced.
As it stands, I rate the collection 5 stars out of 10. I recommend that listeners take breaks between entries - avoid listening to all four books in a row unless you're comfortable with losing "professional respect" for the main character.

NOTE: The fact that I got the audiobook as a 'Plus' selection doubtless improves my impression of the compendium, too (it's likely not even as good as I imply - but it's a reasonable investment of time if you can get it for free)..
Regardless, paying a Credit for this distinctly "average" recording would be hard to defend.

[FYI: If you cut off your own ears with a machete, you can still hear.. it doesn't protect you from "sonic attacks"
..and virtually any non-American citizen on the planet can tell you that 55 km/hr on a Highway is comically slow - not frighteningly breakneck no matter *how* rough the going]

Unrelenting Sarcasm.. *sigh*

I found the writer's 'cutesy' humor very difficult to tolerate, but stuck it out to chapter 33 when there were simply too many (gratuitous) gruesome body parts.

Not my kind of humor
