À propos de cet audio
With new alliances forged and old regimes fractured, Merlin—the cybernetic avatar of Earth's last survivor and immortal beacon to humanity—and the colonies of Safehold have many adventures ahead in Through Fiery Trials, the continuation of David Weber's New York Times bestselling military science fiction series.
Those on the side of progressing humanity through advanced technology have finally triumphed over their oppressors. The unholy war between the small but mighty island realm of Charis and the radical, luddite Church of God's Awaiting has come to an end.
However, even though a provisional veil of peace has fallen over human colonies, the quiet will not last. For Safehold is a broken world, and as international alliances shift and Charis charges on with its precarious mission of global industrialization, the shifting plates of the new world order are bound to clash.
Yet, an uncertain future isn't the only danger Safehold faces. Long-thought buried secrets and prophetic promises come to light, proving time is a merciless warden who never forgets.
“Vast, complex, intricate, subtle, and unlaydownable....The biggest thing in science fiction since Isaac Asimov's Foundation series.” — Dave Duncan on the Safehold series

Weaker Interlude Stories; Points of Spark.
Eh ghad, my heart!
This joke will make sense the more you read along, the main storyline appears to be attempting to clean up loose ends while providing two new story arcs, one in the Empire of North Harchong and one involving the ending. I hope this clears up a lot in the second of this arc, though it was definitely an unsteady landing post Jihad.

Please go back to the old Narrator. Please
very uncomfortable to listen to as volume changes and harshness of voicework contributed to my wife simply not tolerating it during our drives. Please go back to the old Narrator, much better for our ears.
Otherwise, good old Safehold, can't wait for the next one.

I wish I could quit you...
If you are still reading this series at this point you, like me, are probably invested in the characters and over arching story. However you have also developed a tolerance to the glaring short comings of the series:
1) Long winded info dumbs about obscure technology
2) Every character has long internal dialogues that use the phrase "to be fair" or "if I'm completely honest" ever two or three sentences in order to impart information that no regular person would ever reveal in their internal monologues
3) Long periods of time where the most exciting thing happening is setting up a central bank
4) A great idea that probably needed 3-5 books is stretched thin over 10...now 11
I wish the ending of this book was the beginning and things went from there. The final chapter final restores tension and forward movement to the series, but there was a lot of wandering in the wilderness to get there.
But knowing it would be that way, i still read it, still enjoyed it through the pain and will read the next one.
I have a problem.
I should also make note of the change of narrators which led to a real jar as the voices of most of the major characters changed majorly and the pronunciations varied greatly from previous novels (I have read this was not the fault of the narrator but the director who insisted on the wrong mispronunciations) On the upside the narrator does a better job with Harchong/Asian accents and is otherwise pleasant to listen to.

disappointed
I was excited for another book in the Safehold series but...
The story has veered away from sea battles and focused on land war in nation were in only one country is fighting amongst themselves and none of the other nations in the empire are directly involved. What made the other books in the series great is completely missing in this last one. Long stretches of boring battles with people you can barely keep track of whose side their on, with tiny sprinkles of Merlin's inductees receiving technology upgrades. It's just not worth listening to anymore, I'm struggling to finish and even though I've listened to the other books dozens of times, I feel like I'm letting the author down by losing interest in something he's worked so hard to deliver.
My other gripe is the narrator. Although he's very talented with different accents and assigning personalities to each character. His pitch varies dramatically - I have the volume maxed for a certain amount of time and then a moment later, I'm deafened by the change volume for the next character he is voicing. The volume and pitch of the narration is a crazy up and down rollercoaster ride of fiddling with your devices volume keys. Frustrating audiobook experience.
I'm seriously considering buying the digital book version and have AI read it to me. Or more like summarize it, because I feel like there isn't much in this last book, in this series that I would miss, if I didn't read the book in it's entirety.
I hate leaving a bad review on a book that kind of ruins the series that I have enjoyed so much.
