Histoire
The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

Detective Sergeant Chris Waters got the call at 05.29 that July morning. This is it, said DCI Reeve, you'll be first there, it's all yours, you're the crime scene manager. Suddenly, after months of waiting and wondering, Waters finds himself in at the deep end, and alone at the scene of a puzzling murder. As the investigation proceeds, the detectives at Kings Lake Central find themselves visiting familiar places and talking to some familiar faces, while old enmities reappear in the incident room. Before this is over, Chris Waters will need to make a career-changing decision.

Description
Change is afoot at Kings Lake Central police station. A most unexpected new detective inspector takes up his post this Monday morning, and the oldest detective in the place takes a momentous decision.
Around them, other officers are considering their own situations, and even the building itself seems to be facing an uncertain future. But life and death go on, nevertheless, and by lunchtime someone will make a grim discovery on the Norfolk saltmarshes. A stranger seems to have suffered a slow and agonizing death out there.
As the team from Kings Lake uncover his story, they reveal another, much older one with its origins far back in the previous century. In the tide that governs the affairs of men, it seems, love and loss, betrayal and revenge are timeless themes. Fans of Colin Dexter, P. D. James, and Ruth Rendell have all found much to enjoy in DC Smith's previous investigations.

Another great story with great heart
I have enjoyed every one of the DC Smith stories, and this latest was as good as the first. I can enjoy tough cop- tough bad guy novels but sometimes the violence wears on me. I love these stories of a copper with great respect for all people and an admirable moral compass. The dry wit catches me every time and I frequently laugh out loud. I will hate to say goodbye to this series when I am done.

Grainger’s Shabby Treatment of the Welsh
I’ve been enjoying Grainger’s DC Smith stories on Audible for both the content and narration. However, after listening to Time and Tide I find myself rethinking my favourable opinion. Grainger’s caustic generalizations about Welsh people are simply unacceptable. Why the author chose to verbally attack an entire culture is unfathomable. It certainly wasn’t necessary for the furtherance of the plot. Suddenly, DC and his team don’t seem like the “good guys”.

Love these books
Characters are completely believable both in the writing and the lovely nuanced performance. Sometimes I can’t believe there’s only one actor.
Stories are detailed but never rambling.

Very good story, as usual
The combination of P. Grainger and G. Jackson is a winning combination. Story and narration is what an audio book needs, and this one definitely does.

Accent a bit off putting.
Overall I enjoyed it. if there was anything nagging at me at all it was the very poor attempt at a Welsh accent that never improved at all. And the in-depth description of nonessentials to fill in the blanks gave me a good opportunity to occasionally nod off.
