Description

From elementary schools to psychotherapy offices, mindfulness meditation is an increasingly mainstream practice. At the same time, trauma remains a fact of life: The majority of us will experience a traumatic event in our lifetime, and up to 20 percent of us will develop post-traumatic stress. This means that anywhere mindfulness is being practiced, someone in the room is likely to be struggling with trauma. At first glance, this appears to be a good thing: Trauma creates stress, and mindfulness is a proven tool for reducing it. But the reality is not so simple.

Drawing on a decade of research and clinical experience, psychotherapist and educator David Treleaven shows that mindfulness meditation - practiced without an awareness of trauma - can exacerbate symptoms of traumatic stress. Instructed to pay close, sustained attention to their inner world, survivors can experience flashbacks, dissociation, and even retraumatization. This raises a crucial question for mindfulness teachers, trauma professionals, and survivors everywhere: How can we minimize the potential dangers of mindfulness for survivors while leveraging its powerful benefits?

Trauma-Sensitive Mindfulness offers answers to this question. Part I provides an insightful and concise review of the histories of mindfulness and trauma, including the way modern neuroscience is shaping our understanding of both. Through grounded scholarship and wide-ranging case examples, Treleaven illustrates the ways mindfulness can help - or hinder - trauma recovery.

Part II distills these insights into five key principles for trauma-sensitive mindfulness. Covering the role of attention, arousal, relationship, dissociation, and social context within trauma-informed practice, Treleaven offers 36 specific modifications designed to support survivors' safety and stability. The result is a groundbreaking and practical approach that empowers those looking to practice mindfulness in a safe, transformative way.

Extraordinary work by a gifted scholar and teacher

This book is an amazing resource tool. As someone who has not had the benefit of working with a trauma therapist, just reading this book has transformed my world! Learning how the body and mind processes trauma is a fantastic opening. The other piece that is important is David's locatedness in social justice. Paul Brion's voice is also wonderful. I could go on forever. Buy this book in all formats and use it to help so many people ground themselves in their bodies and change their lives. This knowledge is important to bring balance to the wonderful tradition of mindfulness. As David says, mindfulness creates change but it is not a one-size only kind of experience. it needs fine calibration and lots of wisdom. I especially value David's focus on social connectedness during meditation!

From a survivor with complex P.T.S.D.

With all that I have read in my quest for health, I have never identified, understood and accepted and related to a piece of literature like this book. I recommend it to anyone with a traumatic past, anyone treating someone or just be prepared for that unexpected day where a friend opens up and truly needs you.

Loved it!

As a clinician who facilitates mindfulness groups for individuals recovering from concurrent disorders, I found the considerations around trauma to be highly relevant. A very worthwhile listen. #Audible1

key content for trauma awareness and recovery

a bit repetitive overall but still very relevant and necessary info. the social justice/antioppression and nervous system topics are not commonly covered in other similar work I've read.

Excellent book ! Excellent timing !

Wow ! Thank you Mr. Treleaven, for this work.
It arrived in my life in such great timing.
I would rate it as outstanding because of the capacity to highlight and say out loud truths most people try so hard to avoid.

Very helpful I you want a clear understanding of Post traumatic condition and if you want a holistic perspective on trauma.

Trauma == Sankhara

Replace trauma with sankhara for those with a pali or vipassana background 🙂 The number of times the narrator said the word with their particular annunciation started to create an emotional aversion to the content purely because of the associations with this English word. However, what the writer seems to be describing over and over again is a Sankhara - conceptually being the mental formation which is the result of a repressed emotional reaction to a sensory experience.
