Description

For plain and pure imaginative delight, Treasure Island is unsurpassed. From the moment narrator Jim Hawkins meets the blind pirate Pew at the Admiral Benbow Inn until the spirited battle for hidden treasure on a tropic island, the novel spawns unforgettable scenes and characters that have thrilled readers young and old since its original publication in 1883. A story that centers around the battle between good and evil, Treasure Island is, in the words of G.K. Chesterton, "the realizaton of an ideal, that which is promised in its provocative and beckoning map; a vision not only of white skeletons but also green palm trees and sapphire seas."

Ce que les critiques en disent

"Climb aboard for the swashbuckling adventure of a lifetime. Treasure Island has enthralled (and caused slight sea-sickness) for decades. The names Long John Silver and Jim Hawkins are destined to remain pieces of folklore for as long as children want to read Robert Louis Stevenson's most famous book. With it's dastardly plot and motley crew of rogues and villains, it seems unlikely that children will ever say no to this timeless classic." (Amazon.com)

Curious?

I was always curious about Treasure Island and glad I completed this. The performance was great and it’s easy to understand why this is a classic.

'Decent' Recording of a Legit Timeless Classic

There are some very good reasons why 'Treasure Island' is considered a masterpiece of English Literature: Robert Louis Stevenson puts together a well-plotted, exciting adventure (complete with Pirates, Mutiny, Musket Battles, and Sword-Fights); populates it with some of the most memorable characters ever written ('Jim Hawkins' and 'Long John Silver' in particular); and paces it to prompt page-turning (we can't wait to hear what happens next).. this story is over far before readers/listeners are ready.
The work belongs on everyone's "Bucket List" of books to read - especially suited for imaginative kids. This particular iteration tells the story nicely - presenting it in the unabridged form in which it was intended (radioplay adaptations, film screenplays, and graphic novel versions are more than fine.. but Stevenson's original is THE way to experience it).

Also in it's favor, Blackstone Audio Inc did a nice job casting the project: Frederick Davidson does a professional job reading the book.. exhibiting creditable diction & cadence, for example - but with particularly praiseworthy voice-acting (recognizing some injudiciously cartoonish portrayals).
Less fortunately, Davidson has a noticeable lisp at times, is guilty of monotone delivery, and often overenunciates. I have definitely heard better performances.

As a Public Domain novel, this book is available all over the Internet for free (with audio versions on, say, YouTube, Librivox, and others).
Consequently, I would submit that you should save your Credit should Audible ask for one. If you can get this recording as a 'Plus' selection, however, it's a reasonable option (especially if you're going on a long car ride with kids). Can recommend.
