I love la plante , but the audible was boring. I wish I had my credit back

Author Lynda La Plante has a unique talent for writing unlikable characters. Every individual in this admittedly gripping investigation and court proceeding about the abduction/murder of a 6-year-old girl is distasteful. Everyone from the accused to the lawyers to the police to the victim's family are secretive and self-absorbed (preoccupied with how the events affect them personally rather than any semblance of "justice"). I get the distinct impression that La Plante is a genuine Misanthropist - only able to see the deficiencies in people.. blind to any redeeming characteristics. The plausible narrative in 'Trial and Retribution" is realistic but uncomfortably laser-focussed on the darker elements  of humanity.
That said, the dialogue is true-to-life, the descriptions are vivid, and the procedures & forensics exude authenticity (La Plante knows her stuff). The plot is captivating, paced nicely, and full of reinvigorating twists and turns.

Less fortunately, reader Colin Mace is notably below-average (Zaffre Publishing clearly miscast this project). Mace's diction is professional enough and his tone matches the text perfectly, but he suffers from lipsmacking drymouth (avoid headphones), character accents are often hard to decipher (despite a respectable repertoire of distiguishable voices), and Mace reads with incomprehensible long pauses and at a glacial rate (setting playback speed to 1.15X made up for it a little).

Taken altogether, the book merits 7 out of 10 stars. If - like me - you can get it as a 'Plus' selection.. it's worth a listen. If, on the other hand, Audible demands a Credit.. you're not crazy to give it a try, but other (better) options beckon.
