Most people have heard of the Celts - the elusive, ancient tribal people who resided in present-day England, Ireland, Scotland and France. Paradoxically characterized as both barbaric and innocent, the Celts appeal to the modern world as a symbol of a bygone era, a world destroyed by the ambition of empire and the spread of Christianity throughout Western Europe. Despite the pervasive cultural and literary influence of the Celts, shockingly little is known of their way of life and beliefs, because very few records of their stories exist.

Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey are unquestionably two of the greatest epic masterpieces in Western literature. Though more than 2,700 years old, their stories of brave heroics, capricious gods, and towering human emotions are vividly timeless. The Iliad can justly be called the world’s greatest war epic. The terrible and long-drawn-out siege of Troy remains one of the classic campaigns. The Odyssey chronicles the many trials and adventures Odysseus must pass through on his long journey home from the Trojan wars to his beloved wife.

Johnnie Rico never really intended to join up—and definitely not the infantry. But now that he’s in the thick of it, trying to get through combat training harder than anything he could have imagined, he knows everyone in his unit is one bad move away from buying the farm in the interstellar war the Terran Federation is waging against the Arachnids. Because everyone in the Mobile Infantry fights. And if the training doesn’t kill you, the Bugs are more than ready to finish the job.

I especially loved the opening of the chapter "The luck of Troy". Stephen seemed to be channeling Douglas Adams in both writing and performance.
Fry's Saga: Mythos, Heroes and, of course, this wonderful rendition of the story of Troy have enthralled me and helped me come to terms with some existential dread I've been dealing with of late (I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one these days).
I have listened through Mythos twice and Heroes one and a half times and expect I will be giving this new volume the same treatment. The plot pacing is great; the narration is somehow soothing and titillating, both at the same time. It feels a bit like gossiping with my very British mother-in-law about the Gods, Goddesses, and Humans' foibles over high tea.
It is my fond hope that Stephen Fry will continue to wear his rightfully earned mantle of Bard for many long, fruitful, and pleasant years to come.
I do wonder why he hasn't been knighted yet though...
Sir Stephen Fry should be Commended to His Majesty
