À propos de cet audio
One evening, Tru Lockhart gets a bizarre visit from his father Argus, who has escaped from an institution for the criminally insane. Tru is certain that murder is on his father's mind. Instead, Argus performs a bizarre ceremony that will trigger a startling chain of events, plunging Tru into many oddball worlds, and into the hands of many outlandish villains. They all want to develop and use Tru's hidden powers for their own dark purposes. For Tru, wondering why devils and hooligans want control of his destiny is a matter of survival. Is he just some stooge in some sinister plan, or does he have a choice that can set him free? The truth will bring him further from reality than he’s ever been, and deep into a mystery more terrifying than he could have imagined. Tru’s world is built on secrets - but secrets of murder, chaos, magic and madness don’t stay buried.
Tru’s story is allegorical to Derek Clark’s - his nightmares are Derek’s nightmares. As a child, Derek suffered unthinkable child abuse, abandonment and emotional distress before being turned over to the psychiatric hospital at age five. His 13 years in the San Francisco Bay Area foster care system reflected an early life of aggression, emotional distress, overwhelming anxiety and being wrongfully labeled.

First off, let’s start with the narration since I did this one via audio. Brandon Francis solo-narrates this story, and his skills are SPECTACULAR The range of voices he can do, and all filled with raw emotion and nuance is incredible. I think he might have 13 or so different voices in this one alone! Definitely a star narrator. Oh, and he sings in this one too!
Now, this story is a dark fantasy adventure laced with thriller and psychological elements. You should know going in that it’s based on the true story of author Derek W. Clark but told through a dark, fantastical lens that mirrors how a child might process trauma. There’s nothing childlike about the events themselves, though as this one goes deep into pain, loss, and survival.
This isn’t an inspirational or happy story, trauma in children creates monsters, both literal and metaphorical, and this story has plenty of monsters. I’ve never experienced foster care myself, but I have a family member who has, and knowing her story and the abuse and horror she lived through made this book hit even harder.
The twists and turns feel true to foster life, full of instability, uncertainty, and resilience. The characters are written beautifully, and you’ll be moved, heartbroken, and inspired by Tru’s strength.
This was a raw, powerful, dark fantasy that’s as human as it is haunting.
