Description

The "must-read YA thriller" (Bustle) from #1 New York Times bestselling author of One of Us Is Lying about a small town with deadly secrets.

"When it comes to YA suspense, Karen M. McManus is in a league of her own..."—Entertainment Weekly

Echo Ridge is small-town America. Ellery's never been there, but she's heard all about it. Her aunt went missing there at age seventeen. And only five years ago, a homecoming queen put the town on the map when she was killed. Now Ellery has to move there to live with a grandmother she barely knows.

The town is picture-perfect, but it's hiding secrets. And before school even begins for Ellery, someone has declared open season on homecoming, promising to make it as dangerous as it was five years ago. Then, almost as if to prove it, another girl goes missing.

Ellery knows all about secrets. Her mother has them; her grandmother does too. And the longer she's in Echo Ridge, the clearer it becomes that everyone there is hiding something. The thing is, secrets are dangerous—and most people aren't good at keeping them. Which is why in Echo Ridge, it's safest to keep your secrets to yourself.

Fans of the hit thriller that started it all can watch the secrets of the Bayview Four be revealed in the One of Us is Lying TV series now streaming on NBC's Peacock!

Ce que les critiques en disent

"It’s even better than what came before: more exciting, with richer characters and a stronger final-act twist.... This is a murder-mystery, and a damn good one, the town of Echo Ridge steeped in an irresistible menace, the questions at the heart of the novel turning darker and deeper with each new revelation. That’s what should rightly make this another smash best-seller." (EW)

"Tightly knit and well-placed plot elements, along with the development of Ellery and Malcolm’s relationship, keep pages turning until the revelation of the murderer’s identity and motivations, as well as some other secrets that turn out satisfyingly well." (Bulletin)

"The mystery unfurls at a deliciously escalating pace, filled with believable red herrings and shocking twists. Readers will furiously turn pages until the satisfying end...with well-earned thrills and spooky atmosphere worth sinking into." (Kirkus Reviews, starred review)

I enjoyed it just fine

I enjoy true crime books with a good mysterious twist. This was almost that. I found I wasn’t itching to get back to it in the beginning and it took me awhile to figure out who was who. Once it was about half way through I started to enjoy it more. The twist at the end was satisfying.

Wow

The book was honestly amazing! The amount of plot twists make this book very interesting. I have a concussion and as someone who loves to read this was a great change I also read the book one of us is lying and it was amazing too I highly recommend both 😊

it was good.

I love her book series but this one was a tad slow. at a few points I was wondering if I missed something and there was a new character introduced without me paying attention.

Disappointing

I had such high expectations for this book considering how much I loved "One of us is lying" and "One of us is next", coupled with the glowing reviews. The first half of this book was a complete bore. With each chapter, I was praying "is this the one where something finally happens?". If I weren't listening to it on audio book on a 12 hour drive home, I would have closed the book, never to touch it again. Once something finally did happen, I was so excited... after chapter 16 I was all in... until about chapter 25. It literally dragged on and on until the end where you finally get the answers and the final plot twist which was such a huge disappointment for me. You might as well have just told me who it was from the beginning because that's about how much I didnt like it. I would have really liked the details about Sarah instead of the lame ending we got. I wouldn't waste your time with this one, but I highly recommend the other two books I mentioned. It's almost as if two different people wrote them.

Kept Me Guessing

I liked that it was so suspenseful. It had a perfect ending to encompass the story. I wasn't totally drawn in by the voice of Malcolm, but overall it was still good narration.

Couldn’t stop listening

I’m considering sending McManus my next marriage counseling bill because it’s her fault I did not hear a single word my wife said all day. As long as this doesn’t end in a divorce, I don’t regret filling my ears with McManus’s words in place of everything else today. This book was that good. I’ve read a lot of debuts the last couple years and have been eager to see what my favorites from the bunch would follow up with. McManus is the first second book I’ve read in 2019, and if her book is any sign of what the rest of the year has in store, it’s going to be a great year if reading.

The mystery was expertly written and kept me guessing right up until the end. If you liked Kara Thomas’s THE CHEERLEADERS, you will love this book.

Both Amoss and Heyborne did a fantastic job narrating. Five stars all around.

Good, but not as good as One of Us is Lying

Overall, this was a good book but I didn’t enjoy it was much as I did McManus’ first novel. I read them back to back and got stuck in constantly comparing this book to its predecessor, which you can definitely tell from the rest of my review below.

The writing quality was just as great as in One of Us is Lying and the characters are interesting (although, not as interesting as the members of the “Murder Club” in One of Us is Lying). The world-building is nice and gradual. There’s absolutely something eerie about Echo Ridge that’s fun to immerse yourself in—like Murderland/Fright Farm, what town does that?

My biggest complaint is that this book is slow-moving—especially after just reading One of Us is Lying. The big main event/tension in the book (the new missing girl) doesn’t even happen until you’re about 52% in. Everything leading up to then is well-written and purposeful, but this novel is definitely more of a slow-burn than a fast-moving action-packed ride. The slow pace was disappointing to me.

A smaller complaint is what I feel was a missed opportunity with relational development among the characters. There was SUCH good development amongst the characters in One of Us is Lying, that I expected the same here. I wanted to see more from Declan and Malcolm’s relationship, especially since it was so broken/non-existent. I really wanted to feel an awesome twin-bond from Ezra and Ellory (the longer the book goes on, Ezra just fades into the background). I wanted to see more relational development from Sadie and all of her family members (her mother and her two children). Yes, Ellory and Sadie have one intense heartfelt conversation, but that’s really it. I felt like a lot of relational development was missing (get it? Because the book’s main theme is about missing girls).

I enjoyed the twist at the end and the culprit was someone that I didn’t expect (unlike in One of Us is Lying where I accurately guessed who done it) and I appreciated the surprise. I also really loved Ellory’s closing chapter about the secret she learns and is now charged with keeping. It really brings a poetic feel to the title of the book as she is the only other person besides the culprit now that knows this secret and that number will never grow beyond two people. I wish that ending hadn’t gone by so fast. I wanted to live in that shocking and poetic moment a bit longer.

Small Town with Deadly Secrets

The very last line had me shouting “I KNEW IT” all around my apartment.

“El, we’ve been here three weeks. So far we’ve reported a dead body, gotten jobs at a murder site, and been targeted by a homecoming stalker.”

I really enjoyed McMannus’ sophomore novel but it was as great as One of Us is Lying. However, i did think that this novel was a lot richer and went deeper into the characters. This book had the whole “small town with secrets” vibe and I ate it right up.

I absolutely adored the characters and found myself laughing along with them. Ezra (Ellery’s twin) was my absolute favourite. I wish his sexuality had been mentioned more but instead it faded into the background. The sibling relationship in this novel is the best one i have ever read. I enjoyed the twins’ snarky comments and playful banter but i adored how they were always there for one another. Their relationship with their mother was so tenuous and i thought the dynamic between the three was well fleshed out.

Malcolm had my heart from the moment he appeared and Ellery’s crime buff nature had me relating to her instantly. These two POVs were never boring. Their searching for the truth of the past and present was easy to follow and I thought. There is romance in this but i actually thought it was super adorable. The romance didn’t detract from the overall novel and i found myself melting when they kept getting interrupted.

This was very fast-paced and a quick read.
The ending left me with more questions and that bothers me a little. Plus, the killer reveal was a tad underwhelming. That being said, i enjoyed the build up. I never really knew who to expect and did not once suspect the real killer.

More YA than anticipated

Not quite as good as (and quite a bit more YA than) the first book by this author. Overall, enjoyable with the last 3 hours being suspenseful and worthy of binge-listening.

Siri?

I was so upset with this book because of the narration. I will probably order the hard copy because I love Karen McManus and the story seemed interesting, but I could not handle listening any longer. The male voice sounds as though they put it into Siri and let the machine read it off.... painful.

Awesome

I don’t generally find a YA novel that satisfies the requirements to be a good murder mystery but both of McManus’s novels do. Both novels are well written with just the right amount of suspense for an audiobook. I kept wanting to get back to my car to continue the story. Both performances were great and I like the dual narrators to break up the monotony of just one reader.
