In this witty, charming follow-up to the acclaimed Crooked Heart, the life of lies a small time scammer and her adopted son have constructed in London becomes endangered during the tumultuous final months of World War II.
It’s late 1944. Hitler’s rockets are raining down on London with vicious regularity and it’s the coldest winter in living memory. The Allies are gaining ground, but victory is certainly dragging its feet.
In a large house next to Hampstead Heath, Vee Sedge is barely scraping by with a herd of lodgers to feed and her young charge Noel, almost fifteen now, to clothe and educate. When she witnesses an accident and finds herself in court, the repercussions are both unexpectedly marvelous and potentially disastrous. Because Vee is not actually the person she’s pretending to be, and neither is Noel.
Victory is coming. Yet the end of the war won’t just mean peace, but discovery....
With caustic wit and artful storytelling, Lissa Evans summons a time when the world could finally hope to emerge from the chaos of war. As witty as Old Baggage and poignant as Crooked Heart, V for Victory once again reveals Evans to be one of the most original and entertaining writers at work today.

Another wonderful story beautifully told by Lissa Evans, whose Old Baggage got me hooked. Her sense of history and her finely written characters make me want to listen again and again. The narration was perfect.

Beautifully written… didn’t want it to end
What a wonderful story! Hopeful, yet realistic, funny but poignant. Lissa Evans’ writing sparkles and pulls you in, totally engaging you in the story of Vee and Noel. I found myself rooting for them in their day to day struggles and small victories. The characters are incredibly vivid and compelling, and there is such a strong sense of time and place, you feel yourself immersed in the London of 1944. I hope we get to read about Viv and Noel in another novel; it seems as if they’re just getting started and have so much more to say, such is the world Ms. Evans has created!
Worth noting is Lucy Briers narration. It’s one of the best I’ve had the pleasure of listening to.
All in all, this is a superb performance of a wonderful novel.
only wish it were longer.
my favorite book is crooked heart by Lissa Evans. this book wrapped up the story well but I love the world she's created for the characters V and Noel, and their relationship. I could have stayed with this book much longer. write a third installment please.
