This Benedict Ashforth tale is a little longer than a typical short story (told in four chapters).. just right for a quiet afternoon doing chores. The plot + execution are also well-suited for its role as a distraction. Ashforth's story about an infertile British couple pursuing the underground adoption of a mysterious - ghostly?- child in Italy is slow to start but eventually quite suspenseful.

Kris Dyer's spot-on performance is likewise imperfect but enjoyable (his timbre/cadence are uncommonly expressive but his Italian accents are fairly weak, for example). This is a better-than-good listen overall.

Altogether, 'Verona' is an attention-grabbing but unchallenging audiobook.. really a 7.5/10-star preoccupation that you can either concentrate on or have playing in the background while doing other things. I am grateful to Audible for offering it a 'Plus' selection. Can recommend.
