Description

First there was the Voice of Reason, but now there is the Voice of Rage.

Harley Mason, you may love her or hate her, but never underestimate her. As the Masons settle down to a more normal life following the death of three family members, a shocking discovery of a schoolgirl found dead in nearby woods starts the finger pointing once again. Lewis Sanders, the detective on the case, struggles to believe that a teenage girl is capable of such a horrific crime. Yet the discovery of a second body could put Harley Mason in the frame. Is the evidence staring at him in the face, or is there more to it? Proving a link between the Gemini Gene and higher functioning psychopaths had been Dr Katherine Renee’s sole purpose until she had to discontinue the study. Now, she questions her own sanity. So, desperate to convince the police that Harley is the killer, is Dr Renee harbouring a dark secret of her own?

Ill-Conceived Sequel. Don't Bother.

'Voice Of Reason' didn't really need a continuation. That Kerry Barnes offering was a clever - if often ludicrous - exploration of a thought-provoking posit: that there could be a gene that confers both genius IQ and psychopathy (essentially from birth). Major plot twists in that story turned a tension-filled tale involving a combination of inborn evil and mindblowingly terrible home-life conditions into a reasonably entertaining keep-you-guessing thriller. The final twist (in the last 100 words of the book) was satisfyingly surprising - but didn't really imply that more revelations were to come.
The author has *already* exhausted the "secret child of rape" / "adopted siblings" plot devices by the time the events in this book occur.. adding MORE surprise twists to the narrative just renders the scenario totally unbelievable. I tried.. but couldn't set aside logic enough to enjoy this overly-contrived book.

Even considering an impressive effort from narrator Annie Aldington, the book is pointless. Aldington's diction, cadence, timbre, and emotive tone are beyond reproach - and her voice-acting is truly inspired on this project - but she can't make the book worthwhile.

Altogether, you should consider giving 'Voice Of Rage' a try if you appreciate exemplary professional reading performances.. but this 3/10-star over-the-top bit of silliness isn't otherwise worth your time.
If you're looking for quality Psychological Suspense, look elsewhere - even for free this one isn't that.

[Note: giving one of your suspects the ability to make people suffocate with hypnotic suggestion - basically like Darth Vader using The Force - makes for a laughably unbelievable mystery]
