From Chester Wilmot's gripping accounts of the Siege of Tobruk to Dudley Leggett trekking with the diggers through the mud of the Kokoda Trail, Haydon Lennard helping to free Australian nurses from a Japanese prison camp and John Elliott's shocking death in the final campaign in Borneo, ABC correspondents shared the highs, the lows and the dangers of the front line with the troops.
Tony Hill's own experience as a foreign correspondent led him in search of the first ABC war correspondents and to a compelling and largely untold story. He is passionate about telling this story of the war, about a remarkable group of men and how they reported from the warfront - how they changed the reporting of war and how the war changed their lives.

A walk through time...
I purchased this book because of some research I was doing for a writing project. I was looking for an audiobook that focussed on Australia during WWII. Because there wasn't much on this topic in audio form I took a chance on this book and am I ever glad I did. It's was a wonderful listening experience. The book tells the story of 10-plus Australian journalists who were embedded with the troops for many of Australia's major battles. This form of journalism (the embedded radio-journalist) was entirely new and so the men that fulfilled these roles were true pioneers. What these men did, what they endured and the journalism that they delivered is hard to believe by today's standards.
The book is chronological so it starts with the Australian's fighting in the Middle East and ends with the various battles that took place in Pacific Theatre. In total, it gives you a good feel for the contribution that Australia made to the war, but what's great about the book are the accounts of the individual journalists. The author gives accounts of their various assignments by summarizing and reading actual dispatches from each of the journalists. The author also provides an excellent feel for the trials these men had to endure: the weather, the fighting, the disease, and the military censors. Without a doubt it was a brutal job and these men deserve every credit the frontline soldiers received.
The author wraps up the book nicely by providing an epilogue indicating what happened to each of the journalists after the war. I found this quite satisfying.
One thing that was an issue with the listen was the actual dispatches that journalists made. There are several recordings in the book. Now, this was super cool for the most part, but many of the recordings were of poor quality and were difficult to understand. But in the grand scheme, this is a minor concern and I understand completely why they were included.
I really enjoyed this book and if you have any interest in WWII then I would recommend this unique and highly interesting audiobook to you.
