An engaging exploration of all aspects of hearing
This book was a pleasant surprise. How interesting could a book about hearing loss be? It turns out that in the hands of a gifted writer like David Owen, it can be very interesting indeed.
Hearing loss is not discussed as much as you would expect, given how common it is. According to the CDC: “Hearing loss is the third most common chronic health condition in the US. Almost twice as many people report hearing loss as report diabetes or cancer.” Some consequences of hearing loss are obvious, but other impacts, while profound, are more subtle and are just beginning to be understood.
In “Volume Control”, the author deftly covers all aspects of the topic: how hearing works, the different types of hearing loss, and the history and future of remedies for it. Along the way, the business, legal, and social aspects are discussed. Some of the most interesting parts of the book are the stories of the determined individuals who have worked on innovations to improve the way we understand and handle hearing loss.
The author has an engaging writing style which makes the thorough research behind the book very readable. It provides just the right mix of insightful anecdotes, scientific explanations, and practical advice.
"Volume Control" is an engaging and important read not just for those directly affected by hearing issues but for anyone interested in the intricate interplay between our senses and the environment. It's an enlightening resource for healthcare professionals, educators, policymakers, and, well, anyone with ears, really.
