The brand-new novel in Bernard Cornwell's number one best-selling series on the making of England and the fate of his great hero, Uhtred of Bebbanburg. BBC2's major TV show The Last Kingdom is based on the first two novels in the series. From the day it was stolen from me, I had dreamed of recapturing Bebbanburg. The great fort was built on a rock that was almost an island; it was massive, it could be approached only on land by a single narrow track - and it was mine.

Histoire
The first book in a brand-new series, The Last Kingdom is set in England during the reign of King Alfred. Uhtred is an English boy, born into the aristocracy of ninth-century Northumbria. Orphaned at 10, he is captured and adopted by a Dane and taught the Viking ways. Yet Uhtred's fate is indissolubly bound up with Alfred, King of Wessex, who rules over the only English kingdom to survive the Danish assault. The struggle between the English and the Danes and the strife between christianity and paganism is the background to Uhtred's growing up.

Bernard Cornwell, the New York Times best-selling "reigning king of historical fiction" (USA Today), tackles his most thrilling, rich, and enthralling subject yet - the heroic tale of Agincourt. The epic battle immortalized by William Shakespeare in his classic Henry V is the background for this breathtaking tale of heroism, love, devotion, and duty from the legendary author of the Richard Sharpe novels and the Saxon Tales.

Description
The number one Sunday Times best seller.
In the final reckoning, choose your side carefully....
The epic conclusion to the globally best-selling historical series, coming October 2020.
After years fighting to reclaim his rightful home, Uhtred of Bebbanburg has returned to Northumbria. With his loyal band of warriors and a new woman by his side, his household is secure – yet Uhtred is far from safe. Beyond the walls of his impregnable fortress, a battle for power rages. To the south, King Æthelstan has unified the three kingdoms of Wessex, Mercia and East Anglia – and now eyes a bigger prize.
To the north, King Constantine and other Scottish and Irish leaders seek to extend their borders and expand their dominion. Caught in the eye of the storm is Uhtred. Threatened and bribed by all sides, he faces an impossible choice: stay out of the struggle, risking his freedom, or throw himself into the cauldron of war and the most terrible battle Britain has ever experienced.
Only fate can decide the outcome. The epic story of how England was made concludes in War Lord, the magnificent finale to the Last Kingdom series.

A conclusion of masterpiece
I have listened to all of Cornwell’s Last Kingdom Series now. And I must say, they are nothing short of a masterpiece. Every book transcends into the next and the next thereafter. Because of the weight behind his last 12 books, I was expecting “War Lord” to be no less than magnificent. My expectations were met in a vivid experience which Matt Bates brought to life.

One of the best in the series
My favorite books in this series have been: Death of Kings (despite terrible narration), The Pagan Lord, and The Empty Throne and now I can easily add War Lord to my list of favorites in the series. I found War Lord to be one of the best in the series, so that makes for a wonderful conclusion to the story of Uhtred.
I love the title even more after finishing the book. It was not difficult to say goodbye to all the characters that I have come to love through the years and I don't have that dreaded sadness that comes to a series finale- I think because this book was such a satisfying conclusion to an epic story that I just want to start from the beginning and do it all again.
This book does have our usual oaths (questionable and steadfast), new characters and ones from the past, deception of people and plots, intrigue, and a hefty dose of all emotions. This book truly has it all.
The call backs to earlier characters and battles was just enough to make you realize that this is the end and of course these things would be going through Uhtred's mind especially at this stage in his life. I was not disappointed in the end or the epilogue - wonderful how the author made this come full circle. I often wondered how or if the author would tie back to the very beginning of the series and I was not disappointed.
I have to add that all the secondary characters that come to life throughout this series (and this book) plus all the laughter and tears I've shed during these 13 books makes this series my favorite and Uhtred my favorite character. Do not miss out on this series - highly entertaining and very enjoyable.

A Nice Bow...
This final installment of “The Last Kingdom” did a good job of tying up most of the story threads from prior books and out a nice bow on top. While certainly not one of the most compelling entry in the series, a mediocre Cornwell effort is still better than most. The only narration complaint I have is with the pronunciation of “seax”. The word is pronounced “sax” in English or very much like “sex” in French. If I had heard “SAY AX” one...more...time...

Incredible
Amazing. So well done and a wonderful end to the best series of its kind I’ve ever read. If you have an opportunity take part in this entire series and you will not regret a minute of it. Truly the best theories of its kind ever

The grand final
I have read all your books in this series. Great work, that has provided days of enjoyable entertainment. Being a modern norseman myself, having grown up in a landscape full of burial mounds for viking warriors, it is interesting to read the other side of the story. History could easily have looked different.
Thank you for writing this series.
