What was my favorite part about writing this story?
"My favorite part of writing this story was writing Gene, who came to life almost immediately (this rarely happens with characters) and, in fact, threatened to run away with the whole book. My favorite scene to write was one that takes place between him and his granddaughter, Celie, with whom he has had no prior relationship and who is having a bad time at school. Gene walks with Celie to the local park where he gives her an actor’s lesson in body language. I hadn’t planned how this scene would go, but somehow, because of the dynamics between them, it managed to be touching and sad and funny, all within the space of a few pages. Predictable but good

Thoroughly enjoyed this ensemble of perfectly imperfect characters, every one of them kept me wanting to know more about them.
Everyday life is a struggle but if you go through it with love in your heart you’ll come out on top is the moral of this story. I’m left wanting more.

Such a disappointing listen from Jojo Moyes, who has been a favourite of mine for years…very unlikable and un-relatable characters (particularly the main character Celia) who are all apparently struggling with narcissistic tendencies. The Captain Kirk grandfather seemed crazily implausible as a character or any part of the storyline…and the “happy” ending also seemed forced, as we never really got to know her love interest as a character. I would not recommend this book

There is always something happening, and despite the many characters, Moyes’ writing is so good, and she’s so aware of her readers that I didn’t lose track of who was who. The story threads were just long enough, and the characters were memorable for all their individual foibles. This is a top ten book for 2025 for sure!
