Most of us have at some point in our lives felt like an outsider, sometimes considering ourselves "too weird" to fit in. Growing up as a Russian immigrant in West Texas, Olga Khazan always felt there was something different about her. This feeling has permeated her life, and as she embarked on a science writing career, she realized there were psychological connections between this feeling of being an outsider and both her struggles and successes later in life.

A compassionate and captivating examination of evolving attitudes toward mental illness throughout history and the fight to end the stigma. For centuries, scientists and society cast moral judgments on anyone deemed mentally ill, confining many to asylums. In Nobody’s Normal, anthropologist Roy Richard Grinker chronicles the progress and setbacks in the struggle against mental-illness stigma - from the 18th century, through America’s major wars, and into today’s high-tech economy.

Edith Widder’s childhood dream of becoming a marine biologist was almost derailed in college, when complications from a surgery gone wrong caused temporary blindness. A new reality of shifting shadows drew her fascination to the power of light - as well as the importance of optimism. As her vision cleared, Widder found the intersection of her two passions in oceanic bioluminescence, a little-explored scientific field within Earth’s last great unknown frontier: the deep ocean.

Description
A riveting and candid account of a young journalist's awakening to a life of chronic illness, weaving together her personal story with reporting to shed light on how Americans live with long-term diagnoses today.
Tessa Miller was an ambitious 20-something writer in New York City when, on a random fall day, her stomach began to seize up. At first, she tried to push through the searing pain, taking time off work and staying home, glued to the toilet. But when it became glaringly apparent something was wrong, Miller gave in to her family's requests and went to the hospital - and thus started a years-long personal nightmare that included procedures, misdiagnoses, and life-threatening infections. Once Miller was finally correctly diagnosed with Crohn's disease, she had yet another new battle to face: accepting that she will, in truth, never get better.
Today, three in five adults in the United States suffer from a chronic ailment, whether the illness is endometriosis, IBD, IBS, Crohn's, ulcerative colitis, asthma, depression, anxiety, diabetes, or any other chronic ailment. However, despite the prevalence of these illnesses and the impact they have on just about everyone - whether the sufferer is a colleague, a loved one, or you personally - there remains an air of shame and isolation around the topic. Millions endure these diseases alone, not only physically but also emotionally, balancing the stress of relationships and work amidst the ever-looming threat of health complications.
Moving from Miller's maddening yet all too relatable experience into a deeper look at how the medical community handles chronic illness, What Doesn't Kill You exposes the realities of what it means to accept a lifetime diagnosis, pushing past the good, the bad, and the ugly to offer wisdom and solidarity for those trying to make sense of it all.

Highly recommend
Awesome book if you have a chronic illness. It's good to feel understood and not alone. Well written and well read. I also recommend this for anyone wanting to understand what living with a chronic illness is like and how the USA medical system makes life for such individuals unnecessarily difficult.

Just what I needed
Thus book found me just when I was in need of hearing these lessons. Sometimes it’s not the chronic illness that beats you down as much as the medical system and advocating for yourself in a vulnerable state. Thank you for this brave young woman sharing her story and giving us practical advice to carry forward :)

This is an absolute must read.
The book “What doesn’t kill you” by Tessa Miller is an absolute must read or listen for those living with chronic illnesses/ disabilities and for those who know someone who is sick. I have never felt so seen in my life!! The book describes what it’s like battling the health care system and your inner demons. It talks about how to live with and live with someone with chronic illness. It talks about medical PTSD, advocacy for those with disabilities, what it’s like knowing you’ll never be cured, how to deal with people who tell you “you don’t look sick” or “you look a lot better”, and how to change your perspective on the world.
Anyone who knows me needs to read this♥️
