Janelle Brown writes the books that keep me up at night, meaning I’m fighting off sleep so that I can keep listening. Her twisty narratives, including her 2020 breakout hit Pretty Things and 2022’s I’ll Be You, are rife with themes of identity, family trauma, and moral dilemmas. In What Kind of Paradise, Jane is not like her tech-obsessed peers. This could’ve been so much better if it had a faster pace, less wordy. Solid storyline, but slow moving. Not my favourite of Janelle’s work.

Give Janelle Brown’s What Kind of Paradise ALL the stars in the galaxy! It has everything: coming of age, a fast-paced plot, layered characters, was a timely tale (think, A.I. vs humans), mental illness, familial loyalty, first love, friendship, and… the 90s! That might seem like a lot of things to pack into one novel, but it absolutely works.

Janelle Brown is such a talented writer. I can’t even begin to fathom how she managed to weave all the bits and pieces (or in this case, bits and bytes) into this amazing story tapestry.

You know how The Shawshank Redemption has one of the best movie endings ever? The sort of finale that leaves your heart feeling like it’s been healed in some way? Right? Well, this novel’s ending has the same effect, or at least, it did for me.

The performances by narrators Helen Laser and Peter Ganim are absolutely flawless.

Honestly, read or listen to the book. That is all.

I tried to carve out as many opportunities as possible to sequester myself with this audiobook. The plotting has a few flaws, but it was so captivating that I couldn't justify awarding less than five stars. Excellent narration.
