Description

This riveting narrative explores the lives of six remarkable female pharaohs, from Hatshepsut to Cleopatra - women who ruled with real power - and shines a piercing light on our own perceptions of women in power today.

Female rulers are a rare phenomenon - but thousands of years ago in ancient Egypt, women reigned supreme. Regularly, repeatedly, and with impunity, queens like Hatshepsut, Nefertiti, and Cleopatra controlled the totalitarian state as power brokers and rulers. But throughout human history, women in positions of power were more often used as political pawns in a male-dominated society.

What was so special about ancient Egypt that provided women this kind of access to the highest political office? What was it about these women that allowed them to transcend patriarchal obstacles? What did Egypt gain from its liberal reliance on female leadership, and could today's world learn from its example?

Celebrated Egyptologist Kara Cooney delivers a fascinating tale of female power, exploring the reasons why it has seldom been allowed through the ages and why we should care.

Educational and Interesting

This book is full of educational information, told in such a way that never bores. I learned a lot about 6 Queens, more than half of which I'd never heard of before reading this book. Hatshepsut, Twosret, and Merneith all had such complex and fascinating stories. I would highly suggest this read for anyone who wants to read historical non-fiction that is full of twists and turns and drama to the extreme.

Great book, would read again. Was expecting more from Cleopatra

I would recommend this, it’s. A great read and she narrates it well. It did feel as if the Cleopatra part was different from the rest. Felt like it was missing the same perspective as the other Queens.

Reads like a Massey lecture more than a story or documentary

Wish the reader was more of a performer. Lacking personality and it feels like listening to a lecture in collage rather than being told the fascinating story that it is. Subject is fantastic

Not bad

Better if you already have some background knowledge of ancient Egypt, which I didn’t. Very interesting but a bit repetitive. Would love to see the author lecture in person

Very informative

I found myself really enjoying this far more than I thought. The author interjects a lot of her own beliefs and biases and for the most part I agree with her sentiments. We obviously can’t know exactly what the ancient Egyptians were thinking and feeling, but I think her interpretations were probably pretty accurate. She doesn’t hesitate to slam the patriarchy and she defends new and old heroines in an educated fashion. All the while providing tons of excellent information about ancient Egypt. I feel I would enjoy chatting with the author and she appeals to strong women in my opinion. If you aren’t into female power, I suggest you pass, but maybe also examine why you feel that way.

Interesting

Love the critical analysis of the women’s role in the Egyptian Golden Era, the contrast with in the circles of power around the world through time.

ANNOYING, POORLY RESEARCHED AND WRITTEN!

You already know exactly where this book is heading when the introduction implies that Hillary Clinton failed to win the federal election against Donald Trump due to systematic , engendered patriarchy!

Narrated by the author herself it is impossible to miss the implied forceful , righteous and angery tone.
Impartially is ridden over and quashed.

Historically biased. Historically incorrect.
"Queens" did not exist in ancient Egypt. The term used for a women married to the Pharoah was "wife of the Pharoah".
While true, attempts to delete female rulers from Egyptian history, such is also the case with male rulers.
Once again leaving Impartiality to go hang itself!

This book was not written with history in mind. It s simply another vehicle to bash men.

When writing about all things historical , it is well to observe the quote:

"THE PAST IS A FOREIGN COUNTRY: THEY DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY THERE."
