I liked that the characters occasionally reverted to their Scottish accents, especially as they grew older.

W. O. Mitchell narrates this Canadian classic with all the grace, humour and gravitas of a master storyteller. Even in its abridged form, the story and its language resonates, haunts and delights. I fell in love with Bryan from the start.

You can definitely tell this story was written by an old man. all the women are written very flat, and play very gendered roles in the story. The main character is a pain in the ass kid, who is trying to understand life. But honestly his behavior and actions make me role my eyes. I understand the symbolism of life, death, birth, God, ect but not one of these ideas except for maybe death, are really built upon.
In short I don't recommend.
